Greetings all I got a question is sterling silver, example silverware worth saving when you are investing in silver I've been buying bullion I just wondered is sterling silver could fit into the long run thank you
Tnks and I understand about the plated btw...how do u CK to see if it silver I know the magnet test and marks on item any other way
Also be aware sterling always sells well below silver coins value, and sometimes hard to offload. Its not a good of a "pure play" for silver. Whole learning curve regarding SS objects. I don't know much, except plated always smells bad, sterling does not.
All things considered dealing with silverware I have to say no you are better off with the silver coins of either percentage or bullion. I will say that I don't buy either silverware or silver coinage just bullion if I am buying. People are always trying to get rid of it at the LCS most times at over charging price!
Sterling is a less expensive way to stack but it's better to stick with coins. Unless you're an antique dealer.
Know your markings. European silverware is usually marked .800 as they are .800 fine. Sterling is .925 and you will sometimes see that number. There are guides to markings on the internet. Many people back in my parents' day (1950s) bought Rogers silverware. Avoid. It's silver plated.
There is a collector's market for vintage sterling silver silverware. I've seen some pieces go for decent money on Ebay. Much higher than melt.
