I gotta say anyone that hates on the State Quarter program has a beef with me and I don't mind ripping on them for it. I mean this to those with malice toward these fine quarters. and whether some people think they are crappy designs or just over minted these coins got in into this hobby and it's something I'm glad happened. less then 10 years ago I wasn't a coin collector in any sense of the word heck I didn't even save up any of my change like some people do in those 5 gallon water bottles Since 1999 I started collecting the quarters for one of those silly bright maps they had at wal-mart and since 2004 I got hooked on the nickels and have never looked back I now collect and in the process of making sets since 2005 of ASE's, silver quarters, mercury dimes, wheaties, liberty half dollars, and the silver war nickels. completed sets state quarters in my map westward journey series (oh and I still have a 49 roll box of P peace medal ) funny what the 1st 2 sets were I completed and now moving on to other coins... hate all you want in your own mind but leave it there and don't bother being negative with any new person to coin collecting...it will just turn soon to be good collectors away
I don't have any issue with them. For many years I got them when they came out but I don't consider myself becoming a coin collector until last year. The difference? I became interested in learning more about them, and I became interested in adding classic issues to my collection. And, I actually started adding to my collection although due to finances it is a rare occasion. I am still four away from the complete set; I didn't know what mint marks were until last year and only saved one of each state. Some of the middle dates almost never turn up in change and when they do they are beat up badly. While the majority of my collection is indeed circulated, for the State Quarters I would prefer to have them all in uncirculated then 96 out of 100 being perfectly uncirculated and 4 of them being worn. I have decided to not buy them, even though I could easily, I am going to keep looking until I find them in circulation, either via rolls or in change. I am ALWAYS up for new designs, using the same dang thing year after year is boring as sin. (that doesn't stop me from collecting them, however, and I'm 4 dimes (2 of which being 2009) and 8 quarters away from having a complete clad collection. I am also only about 30 away from the silver Roosevelts.
I have no intention of entering this debate other than to say that I love the state quarters and they are really the only modern coins that I collect. For anyone who hates them, that is your prerogative. I like that the program introduced our great hobby to millions of new collectors. Most are not serious about numismatics, but when these people get older and have some discretionary income many will return to the hobby and ensure the survival and stability of the rare coin market. Years from now, my prediction is that the state quarter program will be remembered as one of the most important events in the history of US numismatics. Here is a photo of my collection. The set is comprised of silver proofs. The 1999's reside in PCGS PF69 DCAM slabs.
if I had not collected 2 sets for my grandchildren, i never would have got the bug to collect again. i had a beautiful collection 30 years ago and lost it in a fire. I gave it up and never collected another coin until i did the state quarters for the grandkids. Now I have every proof and mint sets from the last fifty years and am currently filling in some missing Ike stragglers. I have decided to work on a set of benji's next. For this I am glad they did this. My 6 year old grand daughter is becoming quite the little collector and spends hours when she comes to grandpas house just looking at all the coins!!!:loud:
I have reached the point where I just want to be done with them. We are 9 shy of being done with the SQ's (all D mintmarks) and need all 12 Territories (P & D). I am actually considering buying the remaining coins so I can fill the holes and be finished. After that I will be done with the 25 Cent denomination.
I really don't like them but I cannot argue it was a boom for the hobby. I really don't like them but I cannot argue it was a boom for the hobby.
my 2 cents I think long after we are worm food they may become like the Morgan Dollar.there was so may odd ball strike there maybe a Vam type listing for the State Quarters
