collect what you like A lot of people here have given a lot of good advice. If I can repeat a few ot the items, because they are so important: 1. If you're serious, learn learn learn. You _will_ make mistakes. The only question is whether they will be big expensive mistakes or not-expensive mistakes. The more you learn, the more you increase the chance that your mistakes will be not-expensive 2. Patience. Consider: you can still easily purchase 75 year old silver coins, in MS condition, (e.g., Mercury dimes) for under $50. If that's the case, then, clearly, there's no rush. Whatever coin you want this year, will be available next year, too. 3. It's a hobby, not an investment. As such, collect what you'd like to have.
So that could possilbly mean the Mint there really didn't want to make coins? Might have still been Indians there so that would have been a great place to make Indian Head Cents and Nickels. Great way to get even with us for taking thier land. Back to the original question. Sort of like already noted take some time and try to find a coin store, hobby shop that carries coins, a coin club or a coin show in your area. Usually you can find them by using Google or Yahoo. For coin shows just type in coin shows and your state. If you live near a border of another state, try that one also. And also, WELCOME TO THIS FORUM. If you can make it to a coin show or coin store, for the first time just keep your hands in your pockets. By that I mean don't rush into purchasing any coins until you really think you know what you like. So called window shopping is a lot of fun and you usually won't regret not spending money at first for something you really don't want. Unfortunately there will probably be coins you later will say, nuts, why didn't I buy that one. That happens to many, many people and not just with coins so don't let it bother you. Just have fun. This is a hobby you know.
