Oops! while typing the message last time, I was not looking at the image and thought that I saw AH 950. But I was wrong. Now after looking the image again, I found that the date on this coin is 957. The middle numeral looks like an Arabic 4 (modern Arabic) and can confuse many to read it as 4. However when Suri dynasty was ruling in Delhi , this numeral was represented as 5. So, the date on this coin is 957 AH and falls in the range of his ruling period. Regards Ballabh Garg
Thanks for that explanation, I had been looking for a reference (unsucessfully) to confirm the appearance of Arabic 4's and 5's for the time period, since they are a bit confusing. I just defaulted to the modern version.
Hello Ballabh, thanx a lot for the offer. At first, I'll be working at the Travancore coins. If you got the images of any gold coins (sovereigns or pagodas or Tulabharams), please send a scan to me.
I've created a couple of pages using HTML and CSS. It seems that Firefox is showing the pages in the right manner. But Internet Explorer is playing games with me..:headbang: Please let me know your opinion about this.
Hello... finally, I've posted a couple of pages in the net.. Please take a look and let me know your opinion.
Hello... I've just submitted couple of pages in the site about Travancore coins.. Please take a look and let me know your valuable suggestions.
Biju, those photos are very good.Eventually, you will have to have a catalogue listing arranged just like in Krause, but instead of prices being indicated, that is where you can put your links to the photos of the coins of each date. You could also have a 'Remarks' coloum, where you can make notes of coins such as 'Forgeries are known for this piece' or 'Extremely rare coin'. Have you thought about having a Patterns section at the end of ech chapter? It is good that you have started to add in maps. What about adding in flags of the individual Princely States as well. I see that you have got a coinage conversion chart, but you have got '52 1/2 Fanam' ,when it should be '52 1/2 Fanams. Aidan.
I have few pagodas in my collection but none of them are qualified as Travancore pagodas. Few of them which I have are Tipu Sultan's pagoda from 3 different mints, Gajapati pagodas, Three swami pagodas issued by British mints and Scott Pagoda issued by Ducth. If needed, I can try capturing the images and can provide you for your web-site (I am still learning taking decent photographs of coins). Regards, Ballabh Garg
Aidan, thanx a lot for the suggestions.. The photoes were taken by a professional. I'll add a remarks column for each coin. And the error as indicated by you is rectified. About pattern coins, just now I dont have any reference material. I'm trying to find out as much as possible. Now, I realize how difficult it is to collect and study the Princely State coins. And I'm excited all the more. Thanx to this forum.. Otherwise, I'd never have taken this hobby to this level. :thumb: Also, I had to learn multimedia, web page designing and now, I'm learning Persian!. I wonder where this hobby will lead me to...
Biju,I remember you posting a photo of an undated cupro-nickel pattern 1 Chuckram of Maharajah Bala Rama Varma II one time.Perhaps, you could find that photo & upload it to your website. Aidan.
I have uploaded some images of different pagodas here. Gajapati Pagoda - Another Gajapati one - Three Swami Pagodas (These were issued by British) Scott Pagoda (Issued by Dutch) This is a very thick coin so was very difficult to scan. Krishna Raja Wodyeyar Pagoda - Achyutaraya Pagoda - Durgi Pagoda - Regards, Ballabh Garg
And here are few pagodas issued by Tipu Sultan Patan Mint, AH 1220 Patan Mint, AH 1221 Nagar Mint, AH 1198 Nagar Mint, AH 1200 Regards Ballabh Garg
Thanks Aidan, for providing the link. It's still under development but I think it's missing only Bengal Presidency series. The other two presidency series and uniform coins of British India are well covered on this site. The nice thing about this site is that it provided lots of historical information about those presidency coins. One can get the similar information from Pridmore's book on British Indian coins but those two books are out of print and are so tough and expensive. So I find this web-site a good alternate resource for those information for people who casually collect these series. Regards Ballabh Garg
Ballabh,I saw no coins depicted there on that website. All it is is the home page,& then some historical information about India coming under British rule. Aidan.
This web-site is developed in a different style and works like "Windows Explorer". On left hand side, next to word Britain, there is a "plus sign in a box". Click on the plus sign and you will see that it expands to "Madras Presidency", "Bombay Presidency" and "Uniform Coinage". There are plus sign next to each other and each will expand when associated plus sign are clicked. Once you reach to a certain mint within a presidency, you can see how many coins they issued and the details on those coins. Hope this will help and you will be able to navigate on this site. Regards Ballabh Garg
Pics are there Aiden just a bit slow to load, been on and off it all day as I have been buying a stack of Indian coins mainly low values but with a few Rupees thrown in (Pre Indipendence) decided to expand from just EIC Will post oics once they start to arrive. De Orc Ps also bought some other Colonial bits as I was going along LOL
I just realized that you may be seeing only this If this is the case, you need to double click the "Coin of India" and you will see And after clicking the plus signs, you will notice that it expands to Highlighting any of these mints will display the additional info and images of those coins. Regards Ballabh Garg
