De orc...When and where were the first bi-metal coins issued? I vaguely remember some from my childhood in the 1950's. Thanks... Traci
The first ones are a little older than that. "The basic idea of bi-metallic coins is not a new one. What is considered by many as one of the earliest strikings of bi-metallic prototypes dates back to 1730, when a silver token with a center copper plug was struck in Cologne, Germany. However, during the reign of Charles I, the English Rose Farthing 1625-1649, had a brass wedge inserted into the copper as an anti-forgery device." http://www.wbcc-online.com/bi-metal_history.html And you can even go back to ancient Rome: http://www.wbcc-online.com/roman/roman_bi-metallic.html Christian
Thanks Chris....Good info in the top link...the other is just Bilion. I never would have guessed about the Tudor coin. 1730....Live & learn. Traci
Yeah, I'm pretty good at copying and pasting, right? Actually I remember that, when "we" got our bi-met euro coins, this question about earlier such pieces came up in a euro forum. Of course people then mentioned the Italian coins (as from 1982), and those from France and the UK that came a little later. Then somebody pointed at that WBCC page, and I was quite surprised too ... Christian
Hello every one if you want excel file thailand all bi-matal coins you can e mail me at magicman59@hotmail.com i will give you freee !!!! yes it free ??!!!
I guess since this is the world coins forum, you're probably not interested in us coins for this subset. As expensive as it may be, the Library of Congress Commem. has a gold outer ring and platinum inner disc.
I certainly would be interested in the uS one if I could afford that sort of money but as i cant the question is moot LOL Magicman email sent :thumb:
