Either the artist design wasn't thinking about details or the flag shown is just a partial of the present day flag, since it's hard to tell with the folds and rolls in the flag, along with the top being cut off of what exact flag it is representing. The obverse seems to be correct flag of the time, I think the reverse is more of a generic flag drawing.

I think it's the 15 star version from that time period (1814).

    From the mint's website:

"The obverse (heads side) design of the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar is emblematic of the theme "The Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry." It depicts Lady Liberty waving the 15-star, 15-stripe Star-Spangled Banner flag with Fort McHenry in the background. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2012.

The reverse (tails side) design is emblematic of the theme "The Star-Spangled Banner" (the flag). It depicts a waving modern American flag. Inscriptions are ONE DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
    ."

I look and inspect all of my coins, still no reason to return them as of yet! Are you implying I don't? How would you know such a thing or even question without seeing them yourself in person? Kind of an absurd thing to assume. ;)

I picked up my four (2 uncirculated) and (2 proofs) from p.o. today, I really like how the stars stand out on the proofs

Got mine Unc. and proof today. They are nice, I'm considering getting more before they raise the price.

More of each, or one or the other?

More of each, I'm also thinking it may be a good gift to family members in the future.

In that case why does the flag on the reverse have 15 stripes?

I don't know, maybe my perceptions of perfectitude are lacking too but I see little to squabble about when I receive my shipments from the mint.

[hope to blazes I don't jinx myself :)]

Your right I looked at the coin this morning and I thought I remembered it having 15 stripes like the ones on the obverse and rev of the gold coin. My error.

I probably return 10%. I sometimes get 70's, I usually accept 69's, but no way do I keep 68's or lower.
