Just class and beauty from you everytime out @TIF . I throw a house party, and when you show up it turns into a full on ball! That's enough Olympic silver to melt down and make yourself a medal! Ps, thanks for the link. Very cool article
Apene races were first held at the Olympic Games around 500 BC. Isn't that right? The tyrant Anaxilas, apparently had an Olympic mule-team victory in 480 B.C. and I'm told he commemorated it with this coin type. The design is associated with Messana and the design was kept after Anaxilas’ death in 476 BC. SICILY, Messana AR Tetradrachm 480-461 BC 17.21 grams, 25 mm. An utterly pointless observation, but this is probably the least inopportune moment I'll ever have to make it -- a lot of the Hellenistic rulers had quite an '80s sort of appearance, no? The combination of the big hair and the ̶h̶e̶a̶d̶b̶a̶n̶d̶s̶ diadems they tend to sport -- puts me in mind of John McEnroe or similar. (Alexander II Zabinas of the Seleucids -- not my coin, of course.)
Yeah, the Greeks with their diadems had that "Lets Get Physical" 80's look Makedon Philip III Arrhidaeus-Alex IV Drm Amphipolis mint 259g 13mm Apollo-Youth horse VERY RARE SNG ANS 621 Le Rider123

Sorry but the best album of the 80’s was Doolittle by The Pixies. Far more original and influential than anything Huey Lewis and the News ever released.
The best album from the 80s was this: And so I offer you this proposed coin design (sorry it's not ancient): You can read about it here.
I love all the passion about everyone's favorite albums (especially the rock albums). Of course we all know there is no "best" album. As that is a subjective term. Opinions are luck butts. We all have em. And they all stink! Coins however, don't stink. To quote the emperor Vespasian, when being hassled by son Titus on his new scheme to charge the citizens to use Rome's outdoor toilets connected to the Cloaca Maxima. Titus felt his father was demeaning his own authority by doing this. Vespasian famously had Titus smell a coin and asked if it stank. When Titus said, "No." Vespasian's response, "Yet it comes from urine!?" Hence the now often used phrase "Pecunia non olet" money doesn't stink! So Here are a couple more sports related coins I've come across in the ol collection... A little archery (though me thinks he probably has a Greek in the crosshairs and not a bullseye) OrodesI Hellenistic Monarchies, The Parthian Kingdom - 80-77 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 3.35g). Rhagae. Bust wearing a tiara with eight point in centre tthron withshort beard / Archer seated right on throne A little wrestling (as we know, from all the imagery from later coinage with Herakles wearing this fellas head as a cap, this wrestling match was for keeps!) LUCANIA, Herakleia 433-330 BCE. AR Diobol (1.15 gm). Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet decorated with hippocamp / Herakles kneeling right, head facing, wrestling with the Nemean lion; EP upper right, club left. Van Keuren 62 (same dies); SNG ANS 33 (same dies). Toned EF, surfaces grainy.
Huey Lewis and the News! Man, I hadn't thought about them in years! Hey, archery is a sport, right? And it is Hip To Be Square!
What about quadriga racing? That has to be one of the most outrageous of the ancient sports: Controlling four high spirited horses while standing on a light wood and wicker framework while galloping at full speed in a crowded stadium with multiple other teams seems so dangerous! Talk about turn one crash! No pit stops for tires, fuel and a wing adjustment. John
Huey Lewis and the News are certainly the epitome of 80s cheese. Rolling Stone magazine once called Sports the Mount Everest of cheese. My pick from the 80s is a bit more low key. Crowded House - Self-titled Don't Dream It's Over was the big hit from the album which got to #2 in the US in 1987. And here is a crowded coin. Vespasian AR Denarius, 3.32g Ephesus mint, 71 AD RIC 1424 (R3). BMC - . RSC - . RPC 827 (1 spec.). Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPAS AVG COS III TR P P P; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
