I have this 'Penny' coin that I have always believed was "Edward The Confessor", but I am unable to find an example of it in my "Coins Of England and the United Kingdom", Spink, 1998. Can anyone help me with a reference please? Sp. 1179 (Perhaps?)
I think it's supposed to be (made to look like?) Spink 1179, but it doesn't look authentic to me. There is just something about the look of it (soft lettering, looks like pitting of metal?) that screams not authentic to me. It very well could be authentic, but it has been treated horribly over the years if so. Below is a picture of an authentic piece sold by Spink in June 2016.
I agree with brg5658. The type looks like S-1179, Pointed Helmet type. However, the obverse in particular worries me. It looks unusually soft with soft contours. I have an example of S-1179 in my collection, described here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/edward-the-confessor-penny.310054/ (double strike on obverse)
Following a query about Edward the Confessor Pennies, they abound in the 1180's, including Spinks. I could follow you there blindfolded, if required to. Online, there was even a query from a Mr. Topcat7, allegedly still learning !!!
Thank you @Eduard and @brg5658 Authentic or not, it will do as a 'gap filler' until it can be replaced with a finer example.
