Morning lovely folk, I've come across this coin (Token) which appears to have a sphinx? or some sort of mythical creature on one side and Britannia on the other. There is text around the sphinx but its too worn to read. Any help identifying this little mystery would be appreciated. I've included photos below and the measurements as follows: 1.6cm Diameter, 1.5g
I just noticed the diameter and weight are wrong, but if you use the search function on the site I linked to, you should be able to narrow it down more.
@expat was very close. This is a 1 Lepton coin from the Ionian Islands (1834-1862). The link he provided was for the 2 Lepta piece. Here is the link for your coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces16151.html
Thanks, I noted after I posted, the weight and size were wrong, but didn't have time to check into it further for the OP
Yes, the Ionian Islands (off the west coast of Greece, FYI) were under British rule for a time. Their early stamps have a portrait of Queen Victoria with the Greek words, "ΙΟΝΙΚΟΝ ΚΡΑΤΟΣ" (Ionian State) like the OP's coin. Yeah, it's weird to see a Greek inscription on a Commonwealth stamp or coin.
