You can still get sodas (pop) for a dollar?!? Most of the places I know about are $1.10.

Ouch! The ones around here are $1 for a 20 oz. and $0.50 for 16 oz. You can even get off-brand 16 oz. soft drinks for $0.25 to $0.35 from machines in some places.

Of course, if you go to an amusement park or some other closed-off area, 20 oz. drinks cost $2.

This made me laugh the other day. I paid for a soda with change, one quarter being a bicentennial. The clerk looked at it and couldn't figure out what "state" it was from.

This topic kind of reminds me of what a coworker of mine used to do when he worked at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. He'd go into the gift shop and buy a bunch of arrowheads out of those baskets like they keep near the cash register in many gift shops out west. He'd wait for a tourist bus to pull up, then he'd toss the arrowheads out on the ground in front group of people walking to the geyser and watch their reactions as they found "genuine" indian arrowheads.

THIS IS A VERY OLD THREAD

That having been said - it fits my lunch experience. Went out for lunch today and bought a hot dog and root beer for $1.61.

Paid with and Ike, Kennedy, a dime and a nickel. The lady's eyes got big and she said "Boy that's big" as she flipped the Ike a few times in her hands. She gave the nickel back and said don't worry about the penny. She was still staring at the Ike as I walked away. I plan to spend a few over the next couple days and that just confirmed how much fun it will be... :)

    Just thought I would share.

    Have a great day...

I have recently been spending SBA, one ike, and the pres dollars...I havent had anyone mistake them or get any problems, they all seem to know what they are. I bought lunch with pres dollars and the lady commented that a lady had come in and spent a bunch. The ike dollar raised no eyebrows nor did the SBA...maybe there are more coin savy people around where I live and work :)

WOW - I am a little surprised the Ike didn't draw any comments.

I am going to target young people over the next couple of days. Should be fun. The lady today was old enough to be my mom so I know she knew what it was but she was still excited to see it. I've spent halves there before and they get a kick out of that every time.

    This must be OLD!
( I know, but even two years ago? 25 cents for a soda?)
    (Or was that 1976?)

I used to go through this all the time in attempting to spend Half Dollars or the new baby sized dollar coins. Waitresses don't want them and I've had some tell me so. Our Metra commuter system conductors will take them but will mention not to do that again. Politely though. I've had many people tell me I'm attempting to use fake or kids money. Even at flea markets I've had half dollars and baby dollar coins rejected. Of course where I go to flea markets a Peso is more impressive. Trying to reintroduce such denomiations is a waste of time.

Awhile back I was in the bank and asked the young teller if she had any half dollar coins. She responded, "You mean DOLLAR coins?" I told her no, half dollars. She called over the manager and said to her, "This man asked if we have any HALF dollars," clearly expecting the manager to respond that there was no such coin. But the manager explained to her they generally don't handle them anymore but had three rolls in the vault. I took them, and there was one 40% silver in one of the rolls.

It's been quite a while since I've found silver but the 8 Ike's sitting in the tellers change tray the other day caught my eye. She was happy to get rid of them and I was happy to take them. Just like your bank manager - I'm sure he was happy to get them out of his vault :) .

I've given up roll-searching for silver halves after a very long dry spell. This area seems to be picked clean.

The bank I get rolls at all the time tells me that another guy comes in all the time asking for rolls too. That's ok, gives me something to do at lunch.

My bank has 156 rolls of half dollars.
I've only went through about 20 rolls from there.

I've got a good way of getting rid of the non-keepers, too.
The lady that tends to the vending machines where I work likes to keep halves.
I sell her the non-keepers at face value and in return she searches all the one dollar bills for star notes and holds them for me.

The Sarasota Kennel Club (a greyhound race track in Sarasota, Florida) had turnstile entrances which accepted obny SBA dollars. They maintained two cashier windows just inside the entrance doors, but before the turnstiles to exchange SBAs for paper dollars. They had no other coin denomination besides the SBAs. If you handed them a one dollar bill, you received one SBA. If you handed them a five spot, you got 5 SBAs; a saw buck returned 10 SBAs; etc. This occurred from 1979 until 1982.

LOL, reading all these stories about spending dollar coins and whatever else people arent used to seeing makes me think of a story. Not one Id normally tell, but I have to. One of my buddies got married a few years back, and before he did, me and a few of my other buddies took him to the grentlemans club for a bachelor party. Anyhow, before we went, I grabbed 10 rolls of Sacajawega dollars to split up between all of us. Wow, we had alot of fun with those. None of the girls had ever seen them before, and thought they were shiny. But the best part was watching them get confused when they realized that they didnt have any place to put them.

I've decided to collect the new president dollars only because I can get them in uncirculated rolls from the bank ( P's that is ) and they only cost me face value as well. I'll get a roll or two and save about 7 of the best grade. Then I give some to my grandchildren and little children that we know. The rest I spend or give to my wife to spend.

I went to the store with three president dollars and bought $2.79 worth of stuff. The cashier (a young fellow) looked at the coins and me a couple of times before saying/asking... half dollars? I laughed and told him no they are dollar coins and that it says so right on them. This young guy looked confused the hole time and that just tickled me even more.
