    Did you take the photos?

    I didn't question your intent, although you probably shouldn't be snagging photos from other websites (unless public domain) for the same reason mentioned before.

    Basically in the early days a specimen was a more presentation strike. They didn’t do true proofs until the 1820s. These were often the first impressions off fresh dies too. So a bit more impressive than the standard business strike. Plus they seem to have survived in high grade more often

    you said 1820's- actually very, very close to PCGS
    PCGS starts grading proofs at 1817, except 1801, 1802, and 1803 and 1804 dollars (but since they were made in a different date, really started in 1817)
