NOS, Maybe you should start another thread to that effect since this one was originally started to bring our attention to the proposed design change, not the quality of design or attention to detail that you're concerned with. I'd be interested to see the responses :)

I have been dealing with medical issues for the past week, and have been away from the forum.

When I returned, the proposed Presidential Coins thread caught my attention.

    I will be brief.

I would love to see the series.

I think it would be educational and exciting.

Having taught U.S. History for 35 years, including a special class entitled "Presidents and Politics," I do believe all of our Presidents had positive contributions which they made to our history.

My last thought on the subject is this. I have been ill. Chances for a complete recovery look good. But, when someone goes through a medical crisis, it helps put things in perspective. A Presidential Series gives us a new type of coin, and the choice to collect it or not. Is that really such a big deal.

    Bring on the Presidential Series.

    :) :)

If you put it in perspective, yes you right it is not really a big deal
and lets face it most people don't change their minds on any subject no matter how much it is debated.

Now if they see it on TV that is another matter.

and one other thing Gary, always enjoyed your posts, God Speed to you with your recovery and that is a big deal!

    American 1933 $20 gold.

Metalman, the 1933 $20 gold piece, which was sold sometime in the last 2 years was originally in the collection of King Farouk of Egypt, not the King of Saudi Arabia.

Yay, someone else wouldn't mind seeing the people who have served our country on our coinage! He makes a wonderful point and if you don't like them just don't collect them as he said. You go Gary!

No...I will not collect them...but I will be forced like all of you to use them for transactions.

I can see the excitement now..."Oh boy, the new James Buchanan coins are coming!"

or..."Did you see the Warren G. Harding coins?...what a man!"

Get out your fruit basket as the banana republic coins will soon grace the dollar coin. I can't see how one would rather have Franklin Pierce on our dollar instead of:

If they start circulating in 2007, those of us who collect State Quarters in the proof sets will have to put up with them in the proof sets. I'd rather not have a long drawn out series, mostly made up of obscure presidents, or of bad ones.

Yikes. I hope they never use recent Presidents, too much controversy. They might as well make a Monica Lewinsky Commem coint at the Mint! LoL. I do agree that for kids especially, having historical figures on coinage is a good educational conversational piece.

Forced to use them!!! Oh my gosh! It's not like they would bare the image of Adolf Hitler or Eichmann!!! Lordy Lordy they would simply be the people who served our country! As for them being in the proof sets if they'd be so horrible you could just cut them out and dispose of the evil things as you all see fit. Ohhh Lordy Lordy...

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MILLARD FILLMORE DOLLAR.

(and will Grover Cleveland get to be on two different coins?)

    ;)

I must admit, that when teaching U.S. History, Millard Fillmore was the toughest gentleman to find anything about which was really interesting. I did run across something to the effect that he skinny dipped with the ducks on a White House pond. That would be a unique coin design.

Regarding Cleveland, a man with some of Bubba's failings, he did show considerable courage, and I think is fairly well respected by hisotrians. I believe he was 22nd and 24th President, sandwiched in between Benjamin Harrison. One coin.

I am glad I have one supporter on here. If they'd restore the grandure and relief of the coins to what they were 25 years ago they could really make a presidential series for circulation be really great.

Yes, the higher relief would be nice - but they won't do it. It's a matter of cost. Higher relief designs result in shorter die life - shorter die life means more cost per coin.

Add to that, that the banks would have a fit because the coins would be difficult to stack and/or roll - and higher relief hasn't got a chance. Those days are gone I'm afraid.

But what if we minted our own coins with high relief. oops sorry wrong thread.

It is quite a sad situation indeed. How much can a die cost?? $50,$100 a piece??? Knowing the government it probably costs something like two grand...?

Here's winner President for the our dollar coin...William Henry Harrison.

Never heard of him you say? Well, don't be surprised because he held office for only 32 days. Apparantly good 'ole William liked to hear himself talk and his inaugural address lasted 105 minutes (a record back then). He probably should have wore a coat and hat since it was a cold and rainy day because he immediately became ill after his speech and caught pneumonia. He was the first President to die in office.

So what should his coin be? A guy in bed coughing away? That's the legacy I would want to be remembered for...darn right he deserves to grace the American dollar coin.

Commemorative coins, yes...US circualted coins, no.

How about Ford? Ford wasn't even elected with Nixon (running as his Vice-President). He gets the presidecy after the Agnew and Nixon resignations. He couldn't even defeat Carter in 1976. His coin should be him falling down the steps of Air Force One.

And last but least, when will this series end? Come out with 4 Presidents per year whereby it will be possible for a sitting President to have his or her own dollar coin WHILE they are still in office. Is this what you want? Think!

As for the teachers out there and the unions that helped "dumb-down" American kids by rewriting history and teaching the PC way...maybe it is a good idea to teach histroy like we learned it. We learned about the great things Washington, Jefferson and our founding fathers did to form this nation. We didn't start out history reports that these guys were evil slave owners. We didn't learn that the poor Japanese didn't do anything to deserve the atomic bomb...We learned the facts.

American history has been butchered and if kids can't figure out that Atlanta is a city, NOT a state (like many do)...maybe it is time to trash the PC attitude and teach them right! Maybe, just maybe, they will learn about US Presidents like we did.
