I doubt that the "locals" in a few villages and towns had enough to feed armies supposedly in excess of 100,000. I don't think that's what Roman armies depended on; everything I've read says that they had large numbers of supply wagons. I've also read that prolonged sieges were often difficult for the attackers, because there was a limit to the supplies available to large besieging armies, whether the supplies were brought with them or they attempted to live off the land. And they couldn't always depend on supplies being brought from the rear.

But the next time I talk to my friend, I will ask.

Josephus (Jewish War 7.278) goes into some detail about how the Roman army was supplied at the siege of Masada. Apparently it was a very sophisticated supply train and not ad hoc.

It’s these kinds of questions that tend to throw a damper on a good story from the good old days. There are a number of very popular writings from the distant past that require varying degrees of faith to be considered credible. For ye of little faith, perhaps a grain of salt will suffice.

I tuned in to watch the first two seasons. The gladiatorial combat scenes are awesome. The storyline depicts life under the Republic as brutal and depraved. The best episode was when Spartacus liberated his friends from execution/ set the arena on fire. Even better when his spear skewered that creep sitting beside Crassus.

They has something more effective. In general Giap, they had a Fabianus Cunctator.
