The edge dies were straight pieces of steel and the coin was placed between them with one die fixed and the other movable. Then pressure was exerted against the coin by the movable die and the die moved up the table, causing the coin to roll between them. As the coin rolled between the two dies the edge design was created - and the scalloped effect along with it.
