Spain - 1619-T P - Philip III Cob 4 Reales mounted in a jewelry bezel. I just acquired this little beauty yesterday. It's my first piece of this kind, so any additional info would be much appreciated. Please post yours
Yeah I don't know anything about them cobs other than they have quite the following on ebay and some collectors pay top dollar for them. That said there are many fakes cause they can be pricey. Is the bezel gold or silver, sometimes you can't tell by the pics!
That's a lovely 4 reales cob! The centering is excellent and the details bold, crucial features that are not always present on these crude coins. Your coin is KM 36.3. Unlike her colonial mints, the Spanish mainland mints produced more 4 reales and other minor denominations than 8 reales. Seville was the most prolific mint in the 17th century, followed, based on my experience, by Segovia, Toledo, Granada, Madrid, Valladolid and Cuenca. Here's a 4 reales cob from Seville, 1615. Spain, Seville, 4 reales, Philip III, 1615 V. KM 36.2 13.60 grams
