The Bureau of Engraving is currently in the planning phase for the 2015 intaglio print (souvenir card) program. I inquired whether the planning committee ever considers suggestions from collectors and was told that they welcome them. So I sent in the following ideas. I would be interested in hearing thoughts from other collectors on whether you support these concepts and if you have other suggestions that could be submitted. Send me a private message if you'd like the email address of the BEP coordinator for this program.

------

2015 marks the centenary of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, held in San Francisco. This presents an ideal time to release the third and final reprint of the large-sized World Expo certificates: the 1915 Panama Pacific Expo award diploma. In 1988, the Bureau released a reprint of the Centennial Share certificate from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition; in 1992 a reprint was issued of the 1893 Columbian World's Fair award diploma. The BEP created an intaglio print of the central female figures from the 1915 PPIE certificate in 1994, but it has never been reissued in its entirety.

All three of these massive prints represent some of the best intaglio work ever produced by the Bureau. The previous two generated a great deal of interest by collectors; a reprint of the 1915 diploma would be equally well received. As with the 1876 reprint, segments of the engraving could be printed individually on separate cards. Columbus' portrait was used on three intaglio prints in 1992, however Balboa's portrait has never been reprinted. The standing woman in the center would make an eye-catching individual print, as would the steamers and cherubs in either of the lower corners. There couldn't be a more timely moment to reproduce this stunning piece.
