Hey! I try to give BEP cards equal time. But if you're going to throw down the gauntlet... Okay, something completely different. Three cards not from either entity (keeping in mind I only collect intaglio). The first is a privately issued card from CPMX '97, printed by the Great Lakes Bank Note Co. in Chicago. I think they are still around but they mostly print checks now. Nice trolley vignette, which is another area I collect. The nice thing about this card was it came with a second "compliments" card -- odd size, but nice vignettes. Then there's the CAPEX '78 card, which is considered semi-official, hence the catalog number SO7. This is a small card, only 5x8". But the engraving is superb -- by the British American Bank Note Co. Okay Dave: Whatcha got for us, now?
Whoops -- I just realized I posted the Capex card last year in a different thread. Along with another Canadian card from the show: http://www.cointalk.com/t102361/#post858692
Oh, very nice, Darryl! I've been looking for one of these. I have a couple in the series and there is one for this year I'm bidding on now. But this one has some of the best engraving. Great pick-up!
I really like that Veterans card! Real nice! I wonder if they ever did a POW Andersonville souvenir card? I know the Mint did a nice Andersonville commemorative coin. Here's my latest;
Thanks guys, I really liked this one when I saw it. There is quite a bit of detail in the boarders. It is a nice addition.
The 2011 Veterans Day card arrived Saturday! For those who aren't familiar with this series, follow this link to jump back a bit on this thread -- http://www.cointalk.com/t94663-28/#post1110462 The latest card features a BEP engraving of the Statue of Liberty that I haven't seen before. The statue is the only part that's intaglio, but you might notice other design elements repeated from previous cards. I'm quite happy with it -- and it only cost me about $17!
Well, I learned some things after my earlier post about the Lincoln and Garfield cards (to skip back, click here: http://www.cointalk.com/t94663-31/#post1276388). These are both from Memorial books. If you'd like to see how the following two cards fit into the puzzle, go to the new thread I just posted: http://www.cointalk.com/t197344/
Here's my latest addition, card-wise. It came this fall in a copy of Paper Money, the publication of the SPMC, celebrating their 50th anniversary: The card measures 6" x 8" Paper Money is really a great magazine and I love the card they put together.
The Reapers! Very famous vignette by GFC Smillie. What a lovely card -- is it intaglio? If so, I need one, too! Is it still possible to order these?
Yes, it is intaglio! I don't know if the SPMC sold these at the Memphis International Money Show or similar fairs this year or if they only went out to members/subscribers, but I'd think they would have made some for sale to offset costs of printing for members. They are not numbered as per an edition so I assume they may have many of these cards. You could try to write to the SPMC admins to see if they have any left. I have to check out the SPMC web site which has had a refresh recently. If I spot a source for these cards on the site or any mention in their blog or forums, I'll let you know.
I have been delaying for no reason joining SPMC for some time. I just joined and sent a message to see if I could get the fall copy of Paper Money. Thanks for posting Krispy
I am loving your new Cards guys. And a dry run I have hit. Just not coming across new ones to acquire but I am hopeful in the coming days that I will find some to share with you all.
Guys, keep an eye on the SPMC forum, which is currently being built, it should be a great place to convene in the near future. Also, the blogs are starting to look like a great resource for learning about specific topics. I think some of the research Greg has done and shared on CT, would go great there. Something to think about approaching the site administrator about helping to generate some content for their growing web site.
I was just on it their website -- although you need to be a member to log on, so I couldn't go very far. Looks very promising, though. I sent them a message about the souvenir card and I'll let you know what I discover.
This had to be done! A culmination of all the B.E.P. cards minus the boring bits from the Educational Silver Cert series of 1896! and the added, but never issued 1897 $10...
Picked up a couple nice union cards the other day. These are from the 1987 convention of the Int'l Plate Printers, Die Stampers, and Engravers Union. The railroad vignettes are all from the U.S. Banknote Corp., which had not yet absorbed American Bank Note, so these would have probably been engraved originally by Security-Columbian Bank Note.
