oh man, i still don't have one of either one of these guys. that HE looks super! but those big viminacium AEs are nice in hand aren't they? here's a nice tet of dad... When I fill it, I plan to migrate the pages over a couple more albums. RE has not really been my focus...but I am beginning to realize that I have a bit of money in that book...
I like the Otho but remain amazed at how different his portrait is fron those found on denarii. The reverse reminds me of my Galba from the same mint. The poor billon makes me less a fan of these but I certainly would like one as nice as the Otho. In the later period, I am fond of my younger Philip II of Antioch but, again, the metal keeps it from being a favorite coin.
That was another reason I didn't get a Tet. of his. Portrait looks nothing like the denarii of his. Otho (69 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IMP M OTHO CAESAR AVG TRP - Bare head right. R: SECVRITAS PR - Securitas standing left, holding wreath and scepter Rome Mint, Feb- Mar. 69 A.D. 18mm 3.2g RIC 8, BMC 18, S 2162, C 17
I am happy with the Tet... fills the slot, and it has a lot going on with the obv/rev. I thought it was cool being from Alexandria. Besides, Otho was Emperor for only 3 months, so it was easy for the die-cutter to interpret his own image for Otho! LOL
Me as the the tets man can not stay behind of course.. See also one other I required a while back, a Caracalla from Rhesaena. have a nice evening, do not buy too much )
I know not alot about these tets, I had always assumed they were billon rather than silver? Do I take it that like all other billon issues, the silver content can vary considerably and therefore the coins state of preservation also depends due to the level of silver? How big are they...weight wise.
These are all billon examples, unless I missed a true silver post so YES.... That's my take on it ...I'd guess the silver ratio is probably 60-40 on the better types and less than 50-50 on the lesser examples...but that's just a guess.
Nice to look at all these nice coin posts, after a long day of blowing debris from clients properties.
At 50-50 silver coins still look more silver than the tets I have seen. That is the average attributed to denarii of Septimius. Certainly there is a variation in mix but I think a lot of the variations we see are factors of preservation as much as mixture. I don't claim my Decius to be better silver but I'd never call it billon either. Does someone know of a test of the content of these coins? I'm not comfortable with eyeball guesses I might make without better calibration of the 'equipment'. Like JA's beautiful Herennius Etruscus that started this thread, mine is a three dot workshop product. They did good work.
My T.D. has a strong silver look to it. Trajan Decius (249 - 251 A.D.)
