Sometimes the old reference books are still informative.

One thing I like about old reference books is they can give an idea about a coin's potential. For example, my 1970 Redbook lists a 1950-D nickel in EF for $13. Today, the price for MS-60 is $14-- and there isn't even a listing for an EF any more.

In contrast, common-date Seated Liberty dollars w/motto were listed at $22.50 in VG-8 in the 1970 Rebook, but they are now near the $300 level.

As far as information on how counterfeits are made I would more strongly recommend Coin Forgery

Conder101, are you speaking of the publication "Numismatic Forgery" by Charles M. Larson?
