Have a pair of Ridgebacks at home myself. :)

Bone - Good luck taking care of everything. And thanks for making us all stop and think of the dangers of this seemingly innocuous hobby.

I have a Florida CCW and I usually carry when I'm not working on one of the military bases.

We live about a mile from a local 600 bed jail. They transport all of the prisoners past our house at some time or another, so we have an alarm system, expensive locks, big dogs, and loaded shotguns.

I'm curious, what good is a security company if they aren't going to investigate anomalies? The panel had told you locally that there was a problem. It's obvious the system told them what was wrong, because he had an answer for you. Why didn't they send someone out to investigate the problem? For all they knew, you and yours were left for dead inside the home, and all someone needed to do was "cut a wire outside"? I would think that would be one of their biggest alarms to send someone out! It may just be the fact that I do not have a third party security system and do not fully understand their operations, but it seems to me this is definitely something they would send someone out for.

I can top that. We recently switched from "Security Equipment Company" because our "dial out" system was out for over a month and they never noticed. We had an "error code 403" on the panel, but had no idea what it meant. We finally called them and found out that the same wire had been disconnected outside the house.

When the system call out is down, the alarm is still active and will go off if anyone tries to get in the house; it just doesn't call the monitoring center. I have several handguns hidden in the house, so I'm not counting on the police. (When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.)

I once had a 25 to 30 year old man follow me out of the Coin Show in Chattanooga once! He was following me to my truck and would look the other way when I looked over my shoulder at him. As I neared my truck, I pulled my Buck "Hunting" Knife from it's Sheath to let him see it and needless to say, he turned to the left and walked through several rows of cars before turning back toward the building in which the Coin Show was being held. Once he had gone inside, I quickly walked back to the entrance of the building and let the Police Officer there know what he had done. The Officer said that he would keep an eye on him and also radioed the information to the several Police Officers working inside.

I've never been followed from a show, but if so they'd be in for a rude surprise. :)

Never been followed for "numismatic reasons" but have been followed.

Years ago I managed a gas station in a fairly rough neighborhood. As a rule one never makes deposits to the bank on a "schedule" as it's too easy to figure out. Regardless I was followed one day while driving to the bank to make my deposit.

Now, I would also take different routes to not be predictable. This time I took a new route. Directly to the police station.
Funny, they stopped following me when I signaled to turn in the PD parking lot.

All I know is they are keeping an eye on him for other reasons... As far as me having a .22, LOL.. You've got to understand this is South Dakota and gun racks are still sold at stores here. :) I too have a CCW permit and have a Kimber .45 on the nightstand.

This kid used to ride with his mom a couple of years ago (14-15 or so then) when she was delivering mail. A couple of times the mail lady would say something like "Oh, you've got more coins" or "I''m always delivering coins here." She didn't like the signature/insurance forms cause she'd have to drive down a 1/4 mile driveway and mess with my dogs, LOL...

Anyway, Whistle-Britches would always (like a friggin parrot) chime in with Let Me See, Let me see, Pleeeeese.

I really think they are staking him out for drugs and he was high, hopped up on something that night too. I had nothing with me except a couple of coins and my Overton reference books I was going to loan to a fellow, but he never showed. Damn, what if that kid would have stopped and started looking for me behind that dam. I would have shot him. Jeez...

It may have only taken one shot into the dirt and he would have been running till sun-up. Amazing what the sound of gunfire will achieve most of the time. The bad news is you probably didn't have the ammo to mess around much. I would have tried Clembo's aproach if possible and I would have called ahead if I thought it was serious enough.

Man, never happened to me, hope it never does. Not much scares me, but that would freak me out. Best of luck with getting it resolved Bone. :thumb:

Hope it all turns out well for you Ben and glad you got out in one piece without shooting anyone.

As for "Whistle Britches", if it's drugs I know where I can get them for him. Ship him to me and I'll drop him off in the "hood".

    He'd last about 5 minutes

It was Monday night. I'd called my wife about 1/2 (9:30 PM) the way home and said I think I'm being followed and she said nobody had called or come by. You have to understand and see highway 44 East to understand what I'm talking about; it's remote...

This guy drives a yellow-dog colored 1980s 3/4 ton Ford PU with rusted out fenders. Easily recognizable. I was about 1/2 a mile ahead of him and took a hard right on Hammerquest Rd which goes right beside a stock pond. I turned off the lights and pulled behind the dam. I got out and laid flat on the top of dam (snow) and watched him drive by going FAST...

Two years ago, in Omaha, NE. a fellow was followed from a coin show while he was carrying an aluminum case full of high-end coins. He was mugged and the coins were taken. Dumb criminals tried to fence them at the nearest coin shop and were nailed.

Some of the "dumbest criminal" stories I hear about are the ones that try and mug a dealer from a GUN show while he is loading his stock up at the loading door.... No chance the dealer might be carrying there...

Many years ago around here there was a crime spree. A car would pull up beside you or behind you and intentionally bump you car fairly hard. When you stopped to look at the damage and exchange insurance information, the occupants of the car that hit you would beat and rob you. I was struck in this manner on my way home from work late one evening, but I already knew of the trick and didn't stop. The other car followed me for awhile, then turned off. I reported it to the police, but nothing ever happened.

Yes, I remember that trick as well Cloudsweeper99.

It was happening here a lot. Never happened to me or my wife but I was always preaching to her about staying on the main roads.

Glad you're alright Ben and hope everything gets resolved. Haven't really thought about it for a while but this makes me think. ..luckily only 3 or 4 of my closest friends outside my family know I collect coins. I do know exactly what you mean about deserted roads though...outside our small 3000 pop town there are several that get maybe 3 or 4 cars a night.
