And unfortunately your math would be wrong. :)

She paid twice face for the halves. Twice $250 is $500. $250 in halves is 500 halves. $500 for 500 halves is $1 each.

Hobo, the OP said there were 250 half dollars.
thus there was 125$ in halves.

edit: ok, the story is wrong. unless she paid 250$ for the halves. otherwise she paid quadruple face.

I think I should clear the mistake, it was $250.00 in Halves or 500 halves, mea culpea.

Just got back from buying some propane for the camper, I paid $36.46 for a fillup paid in 35 and a two, the kids running the Hardware store had some field day with a TWO! The Checkout girl (about 17) asked why I was spending it, the two may be valuable (it was a series 2003) and the other kid (a youngster about 17 also) piped up that they don't make them any more! When I pointed out is was dated 2003 and they are in print! Innocent babes!!! After I pointed out that 2003 isn't that old, how can they be out of print? I showed them a silver coin and they had no idea, love demonstrating a point and giving a little education to the curious!

See the clear up in the previous post, 500 halves ($250.00 FACE) BTW they are the wives' not mine, now about the 38d in Mint condition, they are her's not mine!!!

A Cajun Woman's treasure trove is not easily parted with!!!!

I have a funny money story about her late father during WW2 when he ended up with some (non Marked HAWAII) bills in Hawaii, a five dollar Blue Silver Certificate almost cost him some brig time. He saved his Hawaii money, and when I came into the family 30 years ago, I could relate, when the kids divided the money at his death, the story was written down for the non-numismatically challenged so the story and impart of their inheritance would not be forgotten!!

Er, don't know where you're getting 500 halves from, he only said she had 250 of them:

    Based on that, $500 for 250 half dollars = $500 / 250 = $2 each.

(250 half dollars would in fact be $125 in face value, not $500. He never said $250 worth of half dollars, he just said 250 half dollars.)

Actually as it turns out Cajun Coin told the story wrong lol (he meant $250 worth of half dollars, but he orginally said 250 half dollars)... but based on what he said originally, my math was indeed correct.

I know. I edited my post after I reread the original post. For some reason my reply got posted twice. Why does that always happen to the ones you want to take back after you click on 'Submit Reply'?

Please ignore my previous posts. Sometimes the simplest things are the most confusing.

I screwed up. Sorry. My bad.

Thirty five plus years ago my local dealer told me to my face that I was an 1diot for collecting varieties. He was a good friend and we laughed about it.

As the years went by I made the mistake of telling another friend about some of the coins I had cherrypicked from this dealers inventory.
He told the dealer and from that point on the dealer changed his opinion on varieties.
If I ask about a coin the dealer had to really study it before he offered a price. It was all in good fun. I really miss those days.

I handed a Madison Dollar to the cashier in Whole Foods in Highlands Ranch, CO - she asks me what is this?
I said it's a dollar. She tells me "I don't accept tips" - I needed four quarters for my laundry...

When I finished looking through some rolls of Washington golden Prez dollars, I spent them. In one store I paid with about 15 golden coins. The woman behind the counter said: " Oh, fairy money! What are they?" I told her about the new dollar coins.

Her exclamation certainly had nothing to do with me. She meant TOOTH FAIRY money!!!:rolling:

I have most of you beat. When I was about 14 or 15, I started to really get into coins. I bought some au silver dollars back then for around 12 or 15. Now of course they're worth around double in some cases. I'm 22 now. And I have all those coins I bought back then. I also bought a vf 20 1858 flying eagle cent for 25 back then. Heres what my mom said "omg you paid $15 for $1" or "you paid $25 for a cent, you're crazy" She bragged about how it was a waste of money. She invested in stocks. If only I invested around 10k in gold or silver back then and nearly quadrupled my money, I could really laugh at her. Because of course shes lost money on nearly all of her stocks since then. hahahaha

Several years ago I was in a store making a small purchase, and I happened to lean over and see that the cashier had several half dollars in her till, I asked her if I could buy them and she responded "why would you want those old things?" Only when I left the store with them could I appreciate that I had just bought a couple of Franklin halves, and several 40% Kennedy's.

    Mint Marks.... What are they?

My girlfriend's father knows that I collect. Last night he brought out his collection.... nickels, a few silver dimes, and some wheat pennies. Nothing of much value, but he wanted my input.

When I called out a coin with the mintmark-D he asked me what that meant. The guy is 54, and he had no idea what the P, D, S et cetera meant. He said, "I've always wondered what that was."
