Indeed they are tough to photograph. From what you and schatzy have posted, it seems that this guy's photos aren't as accurate as they seem to be, or how everybody wants them to be. I would like to see a few of his coins in hand...would hate to think he is juicing the photos, or just taking photos that don't represent the coin, but make it look better, for a quick buck. I will pay close attention to his auctions, and see if there is anything that interests me. I would love to see for myself, what the guy really sells.
I have bought a couple coins from him as well. His photos are a little enhanced to show the color but at least his photos dont create color. For all the coins I have purchased from him the color was there, just hard to capture by camera but not by the eye. If you ever want to sell anything toned, I would highly recommend him to consign them to. His auctions bring the highest prices. I have sent him a few over the years.
We have discussed this seller before. I think that many of the points in this thread are valid. Dick is absolutely one of the best sellers of toned coins on E-Bay. Because of the volume of toned coins that he handles, it is 100% that he has sold some AT coins in the past. Although any AT coins in his inventory have been deemed market acceptable by either PCGS or NGC. One recent coin that I am convinced is AT was this 1943-D Jefferson Nickel. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360215046826&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Having said that, it is entirely possible that this coin is NT but the photo has been enhanced. Typically, his photos are enhanced a little but not so much that it bothers me. Here is an example of his photo enhancements. The top photo is his and the bottom photo is mine. Notice that his photo makes the gold appear orange and the pink appear so bright it is almost magenta. All in all I think the measure of a toned coin seller is the satisfaction of his customers. Given his loyal E-Bay base, the incredible prices his auctions realize, and the fact that I have never received a coin that I was unhappy with from him leads me to believe that he is one of the best E-Bay sellers.
WOW!!! Look at that Color!!!! As for pictures of tone.. Its a bear.. I have not even come close to getting the shot.. It has to do with angles to get the Light just right.. then a slight adjustment you get other tones.. Well This is what I have been dealing with when working with Lincoln Wheat's
