I'm perpetually being asked if, due to having sold off seemingly thousands of coins over last eight years or so, have I anything left? Yes I do. These photos were taken today. I'll be adding more over time. I have more than these (40) coins. Really.

Beautiful coins and Abafil tray. Spanish imitations of some of the coins in your collection have always fascinated me.

All are some really amazing coins, especially the bronzes. The excellent provenances make them all the better. What's your criteria these days for keeping versus not keeping coins you haven't otherwise upgraded?

You shared the Eid Mar denarius you regret selling in the thread the other day - are there any others?

Series: rostrum tridens, trident, rudder and bird, helmet, thunderbolt, knife, sow, dog, ram or heifer, meta, VAR, female head, shield and carnyx, staff and feather

    Some notable coins:
    - RRC 114 rostrum tridens semis, missing the symbol = McCabe group J1 (this coin illustrated in Essays Russo)
    - trident denarius ex R. Ratto November 1933 FPL VIII
    - rudder denarius ex Leu 17 Nicolas collection and Peter Hoefer collection
    - thunderbolt triens note the exceptional flan

    - heifer or ram denarius - extremely rare; the identity of the animal is long debated. Charles Hersh believes it a heifer, Michael Crawford a ram; having viewed the as of this series in the Vatican museum, am inclined to agree with Crawford. The coin is broken and repaired and was gifted to me by Arturo and Giuliano Russo - long story behind that break, for another time!

Series: staff and club, Etrurian anon., C caduceus, falcata or curved knife, wreath, staff 2nd series, star, rostrum tridens

    Some notable coins:
    - RRC 106/4a Etruria staff and club as, possibly largest known at over 50 grams and more evidence that there was probably a slightly heavier than sextantal bronze series concurrent with the first denarius issues. The coin comes from the collection of the historian H.H. Scullard (1903-1983); my vendor bought it from the Scullard estate in 1983
    - RRC 106/9 staff uncia, noted as being unique in Crawford RRC which it isn't!
    - the semis and quadrans that follow the staff and club bronzes are from a related Etruscan anonymous series, McCabe Essays Russo group E. They always have concave reverses
    - caduceus denarius comes from the E.H. Schwing collection, Mario Ratto Dec.1932
    - curved knife or falcata denarius comes in an especially wild style, noted as possibly being a separate series in the write up to NAC 61.
    - rostrum tridens semis is ex Elivira Clain-Steffanelli coll.

Beautiful coins, Andrew. I'm curious as to how you take your full tray images? Do you have a camera with a large enough lens to not cause distortion at the periphery or is there some other photography strategy of which I'm not aware? Every time I've tried something similar, it's not ended well.

Sony NEX with E-Mount macro: the dedicated macro seems to reduce edge distortion greatly compared with my prior multi-purpose lens; I leave 1/2 inch all round then crop. There is still a teeny bit of pin-cushioning. If you still have troubles then a larger edge margin may help, so long as you have enough pixels to place the tray in the centre of a larger area.

Later coins of Luceria, near Herdonia and Canusium, from c.210BC to c.206BC. This and my next post (earlier coins of Luceria and Herdonia) is probably the most coherent group of Luceria-type coins assembled. A good group of coins makes the division into mints etc much more apparent. This is why it is good to form collections, to study. I did have more variants, sold, and now regretted.

    Some notable coins:
    - First three coins: Luceria. Next six coins: mint near Herdonia. Final 10 coins with P and CA mintmarks: Canusium (cf. McCabe, proc. International Numismatic Congress 2015, for derivation of mint locations)
    - RRC 97/22a L mintmarked is much rarer with reverse mintmark than obverse. Many with obverse mintmark in crude style were struck in Canusium
    - RRC 97/17 semis is overstruck on post-semilibral triens, not listed by Crawford or Hersh

Early coins of Luceria, and of a mint near Herdonia, from 214 BC to 211 BC

    Some notable coins:
    - first nine coins from Luceria itself, with an early (214-213 BC) and slightly later (213-211BC) bronze series, an arrangement that differs from Crawford
    - next six coins from a parallel mint, likely somewhere near Herdonia, in same period, with early (214-213 BC) likely the coins with L-T mintmarks and slightly later (213-211BC) likely with L mintmark only
    - final two coins, dextans and quincunx, belong to Luceria itself, now of lighter series (for remaining coins of this series see my prior tray posted)
    - note uncia and semuncia on first row have same reverse die (for a semuncia) matched with a large uncia die or smaller semuncia die! several examples are known of both denominations from these die combinations so seems to have been a deliberate use of an unmarked prow die on both denominations
    - second row triens is overstruck on a semilibral sextans
    - RRC 98 sestertius third row is extremely rare. Tho the style seems crude, it exactly matches the engraving style of the related bronzes, see the adjacent triens
    - two extremely rare coins with L-T mintmarks end of third row, sextans type having Dioscuri type reverse
    - Mercury head quadrantes from the "near Herdonia" mint, fourth coin on third row (with L-T mintmark) and first coin on fourth row (with L mintmark), latter being a plate coin in Hersh 1987 overstrikes article
    - Dextans and Quincunx (latter extremely rare) end of fourth row are linked by engraving style of obverses to the main Luceria mint rather than the subsidiary (L-T) mint

There was a time when the main advantage of macro lenses was freedom from distortion and color fringing. I worked with a 20x24 copy camera (took cut film that size or smaller) that belonged to my employer. The best lenses were termed apochromats and were color corrected for three colors rather than the usual two. These had very flat fields. They were not any sharper in the center but flat field is good.

Today, those who shoot with 'real' cameras in RAW mode have the option of software correction of camera distortions that still expect a good lens to start with for good results (no zooms, no super speed lenses, no tiny sensors). I have not played with the idea since I rarely use the corners of my images where there is anything to be gained. Coins have a great advantage over stamps when it comes to photography with regular lenses (sharper in the center and weak in the corners). We don't use the corners for our round subjects. Digital also allows easy assemblage of a fake 'tray' image with each coin individually corrected and full resolution. You could make a high resolution 'tray' image the size of your wall with cut and paste. I suspect the only real market now for super corrected glass is for binoculars and telescopes since the cost of these lenses is harder to justify in digital photography where software can fix problems. The easy answer now is to start with too many pixels and crop out the bad ones in the corners.

From a complete layman to RR coins, you have a beautiful collection of coins there.

I hope to add a small selection of RR quadrantes to my collection in the coming years as a side collection, and you certainly have some examples to aspire to.

    - RRC 96 victoriatus, a rare Spanish issue with a fully incuse legend

    - RRC 101 Corcyra quinarius this being the first Roman coin type to have a mint name spelled out in full; the next instances don't occur until the Imperatorial issues of Fulvia (Lugdunum) and Domitius Calvinus (Osca)

Series: corn-ear, dolabella, C.VAR, palm branch, crooked staff, staff, wheel, dolphin, spearhead

    Some notable coins:
    - bull, snake and corn-ear quadrans is ex Glendining (19 Jul.1950) lot 455 Henry Platt Hall coll. ex Glendining 2 (15 Jul.1929) lot 531 and ex Leo Hamburger (19 Oct.1925) lot 203 Niklovitch coll. It's also struck on a massive flan with large dies and is not an overstrike, hence an early issue
    - corn-ear as, RRC 72/11, is a second century issue, misplaced here by Crawford, see Russo in Essays Hersh
    - the pick-axe / dolabella denarius is ex coll. Frederick Hastings Rindge Collection (1857–1905) collection on loan to Boston Museum of Fine Arts cf. 1902 curator's report "we have the Frederick Hastings Rindge Collection as a loan, of which 1105 specimens are exhibited, the majority being Roman of the Republican period". The denarius and quinarius are extremely rare
    - RRC 78/1 staff denarius is a plate coin in Stannard NC 1988 The Hub from Ancient Spain Reconsidered pl.12 who shows the ledge is a result of a collared die, possibly due a repair. My coll. has a second different die 78/1 with same effect showing this to be a technique special to this series (only)
    - corn-ear and crooked staff denarius is extremely rare; the crooked staff may relate to Ulysses and thus to a Mamilius who was a Sicilian quaestor in 207 BC
    - dolabella (2nd series) triens is part of the CN.CO(rnelius dolabella) RRC 81 series whose location nexus confirms to be from Spain, where this coin comes from
    - spearhead up denarius is extremely rare; I've shown (proc.INC.2015) that the quinarius along with some RRC 88 bronzes is an issue of Sardinia and not Sicily.
