We have covered this area before but I will take adding another example of the type to my collection as an excuse to resurrect it. Probus coins of Siscia depicting Sol in a facing chariot sometimes depict clouds beneath. My newest coin:- Obv:– IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate bust left in imperial mantle, holding sceptre surmounted by eagle Rev:– SOLI INVICTO, Sol in spread quadriga Minted in Siscia (D / XXI). Emission 2. A.D. 277. Reference:– Alföldi type 73, n° 36. RIC 776 var Bust Type H (Not listed for this officina in RIC) 3.50g, 22.18mm, 180o A coin that has loads of silvering whilst also suffering from pitting caused by corrosion. Most people wouldn't give it a second look. Some of my other examples:- No mintmarks:- XXIVI in exe:- I know that Doug had some fantastic examples. Let's see some more of them.
Mine are the same old, same old ones shown here before. The best one looks like flames rat her than clouds below the chariot but I have no idea as to the intent of the die cutter. While the reverse is great, I really like the obverse shield, too. A horseman (Probus?) is ridding in front of (rallying?) the troops. My clouds version is second rate compared to the flames and the obverse is less dynamic with spear and shield rexaxed rather than ready for action. The Cyzicus mint versions lack clouds but have CM mintmarks. Before this, open marking of mint cities was rare.
Here's mine. I found it in a lot of uncleaned coins about 15 years ago. It was covered in about 1/4" of gunk, and I ended up resorting to electrolysis to clean it. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised to discover what was under all that gunk. (Is "gunk" a real word?)
Nice new addition, I really like those types with the clouds underneath. The reverse on @dougsmit ‘s first coin is incredible (love the bonus horseman on the shield as well). Here’s my facing chariot from Serdica.
Wow, a lot of great examples of "clouds" in this thread. I need to get a Soli Invicto example, I just have a VIRTVS PROBI type, emperor on horse-back.
