That's an excellent point. bank SDB's are NOT waterproof normally. Paper will likely get wet. Another thing to note when deciding upon in home or at bank.. is the proximity to the fire dept. My bank is within 2 blocks of the firedept so reaction time should be nearly the same as if the fire dept itself caught on fire. If you live out in the burb's like me, expect a much longer reaction time... and in a fire, timing is "everything"..... Also, consider the burning nature and potential heat generation between a bank and your home. my bank just doesn't have too many curtins, christmas trees, wood cabinets, kitchen tables, gas cans, paint cans, etc.. and other generally combustable crud sitting around which can turn a lil' tepid fire in the 5 alarm fire inside of 2 minutes..... Banks are generally concrete, plastic, steel, glass,, with good distance between combustable items.. the carpet interior (if any) and the wood frame (middle exterior behind the steel or block) being the only fuse in the equation imo... banks are a much slower burn, and generally much better protection against getting to critical temp at which fire becomes out of hand.

Wow was kate on last post ok i lived buy a fire station that burnt down i also lived buy a donut bakery owned by 9 cops called cops and donuts
Additional safes or media coolers are a good idea to use inside of a larger fire safe. Most good safes are made to last 2 to 3 hours in a fire and need to be cooled down. Its all about the time. Even the best safe can't be left to cook for 8 hours or the inside will eventually become too hot and cook the contents. Lets say I know of one that's insulated by 2300 degree and separate 1000 degree fabric all the way around, that is used in kilns. So it works like a reverse kiln to keep the heat out. Also large enough to hold a couple Gardalls as media coolers inside that are made for 1700 degree heat. Surrounded by concrete and living a minute away from the fire dept. doesn't hurt either. I don't worry about it. Most anyone who really needs to worry about it has probably moved on from the the shoe box under the bed method.

On this I have to go with the safety deposit box at the bank. All things considered, it's the safest bet (no pun intended). Yes, it could burn down, get robbed or suffer any other calamity but all in all they are rigged better than my house to respond to such incidents, period. I keep 99% of my collection there and feel secure doing so. That being said, I DO go there monthly to check on it and ensure it's contents are there as there have been tales of banks changing hands and clearing contents of SDBs as a result.
Both. But only if you buy the round-trip tickets I need to get there and do airport pickup and dropoff service.
