Personally, I find colorized coins one of the least aesthetically pleasing items in all of numismatics. They make my stomach go "bloop" in a bad way. This goes double for colored bullion coins (which have slowly cropped up). When I buy a precious metal, I want to see the precious metal, not a layer of coloring. I admit it. I loathe them. (goes into corner and sulks)
The local Arcade does that with it's quarters...well some of them. Get a certain color, get some quarters back. Me? I just use it whenever I want to get a paper from the box nearby while waiting for the bus.
The initial Poppy quarter lost a fair bit of it's colour pretty quickly, and if you find them in circulation, the red is pretty faded, yet very obviously there. The Pink Ribbon quarters are still found pretty regularly and I've only seen a few where the colour isn't intact, but they aren't faded, it looks more like someone tried to scratch through the colouring, so they are holding up pretty well after two years of circulation. The new Poppy has only been out for a few weeks, but I'd venture to say that it's colour will hold up better than the first version, that is, if you can find it in circulation. Rumour is that only 11 million were minted, and I can guarantee that a lot of them are being hoarded and collected.
Topher, If your avatar is a red poppy coin from Canada, then I am about to change my mind concerning at least that coin. It is very attractive. The use of a red poppy on a coin commemorating the armistice of 1918 is appropriate. The poem " In Flander's Fields" was very popular at the time. I think it mentioned poppies growing over the battlefields of Flanders. Here in the US we have a stamp issued in the late 1940's (I think) honoring Moina Michaels who was involved in the popularization of the use of the poppy on what was then called Armistice day, now called Veteran's day. I think I will try to get one of the Canadian red poppy coins.
I still really think their ugly. My only colorized coin is a state quarter from New York, wow is it ugly! coins should be coins, not metallic canvas.
Just found out that the canadian mint just did a coloured circulation coin for Papua New Guinea Oh and I find that the more colour used the more unattractive it is. Coloured state quarter is Eww, poppy quarter is ok.
I agree, the state quarters with all their color to them, just does look very appealing. You all have displayed some very nice looking coins though. Thank you for sharing. E
That particular coin looks pretty nice to me.....if USA put out such a thing, I bet there would be a lot of interest. Things are changing, and our values do not mean to others, or our kids, etc, like when we were growing up. I still like to hold on things we cherish as parents and grandparents, but so many little kids have not a clue of what is important, and ....coins are the same way. Look at the "new" nickel out.......why oh why did they pick such a view of Jefferson ? Whew ! I like the way our coins have been,,,a quick glance and we could tell what coin we had, or used, in our day to day money transactions. Just my 2 cents here ...... mjd :smile
Take a look at the Holiday Presents thread and see what a movitated mint can really do with color. Ruben
