So what do you think about colored coins?

Wow. Some of the posts in this thread really surprise me. Why such animosity towards coloured coins? Granted, some of them are just hideous, but that doesn't mean they all are.

To correct a few things, the first coloured coin issued for circulation was in 2004, with the introduction of the Poppy quarter. A simple, red poppy was placed on the reverse of the Canadian quarter, and is forever enshrined as the "spy" quarter when some ignorant people thought they were more important than they really are, and were given these things so that they could be spied upon. Give me a break. that's one of the funniest things I've ever read! One simple trip to the Canadian Mint's website will tell you that this was a regular circulation issue. Anyone who spent any time in Canada will know that the Poppy is a revered symbol every November, and this was just another way of honouring those who served their country. When was the last time the Us did that on a circulation coin?

We're now up to our third colourized coin for circulation, and there is quite a bit of interest in them, not just in Canada, but elsewhere as well. The Canadian Mint continues to be one of the most advanced mints in the world. While some of the designs are flops, there are many excellent coins produced, as they are always innovating.

Of course, anyone who can't think "outside the box", isn't expected to appreciate the simple Poppy or Pink Ribbon quarters, and don't realize the significance of them in Canada.

The collectors here tend to be traditional purists and have no interest in some of the modern attempts by national mints to "market" coins.

Yeah, well at least the Canadian Mint produces mint sets that don't look like they've been put through a slot machine, unlike say.... the US MINT!

    So there... lol.

I think these coins are aimed at kids , who like colored coins , not us older folks with preconcieved ideas what a coin should look like .

they are disgusting and should be illegal. all existing examples should be melted and ownership of them should be a felony. Double Eagles DO NOT deserve this fate. I am VERY serious. thanks.

Most progressive things take off with the kids first as they want something more modern than what old people like and are generally comfortable with??? Early adopters sometimes help change/shape our future.

Are you talking about counterfeit coins or colorized coins?:D

Those aren't too bad to look at when new, but the few coloured coins I've seen in circulation (the breast cancer quarter and the poppy quarter) lose their colour very quickly to fading and rub. While I applaud the thought behind these issues, they become less then attractive.

Mint sets that look like they've been put through a slot machine is both innovative and outside the box :p

It's even worse than i thought

Who says bad taste is restricted to canadians only? :D

It`s quite possible colored coins got some kind of significance in Canada. It doesn't make them any less trashy though. And you know, being able to think outside the box doesn`t mean you actually have to like everything that`s on the outside of the box.

Canadians aren't the only people with bad taste. Look at the people from Chicago...

What did the people from Chicago do that was in bad taste? Well, besides the Cubs fans.
