I was looking at this thread, also with the irrelevancies. With all the shows there have been robberies now, many into the five and six figures, I would hope that a numismatic organization or entity would go to bat for coin dealers with inexpensive security surveillance systems. These have become much less expensive than they were a few years ago. The thieves must have cased every show before they decide on a target. Who are these people? In addition to Charmy's report on the crook being led out of the last show in handcuffs, I would hope we will see more criminal interdiction in the future.
Yes, surveillance is getting more common and cheaper, and so is facial recognition. Soon, it'll be relatively easy to identify people who show up and move in the same patterns at multiple shows where larceny takes place. I still find the whole ubiquitous-recognition trend chilling, but this is one compelling example where it might do good.
Please don't think I'm in favor of ubiquitous surveillance. I think the evil it will enable far outweighs the good. But this can be viewed as one example of the good. If you disagree, please explain.
