whats the thoughts of those about saving my old gold nuggets versus minted gold coins of some type?

Yes, it has some sentimental value and some have specimen value but hey, when the "just in case" case gets here, sentiments are secondary.

short of ebay or a refiner, any other suggestions for selling should I decide to?

    Thanks

Depending on the locale and color of Your gold nuggets......I would EASILY take them over many gold coins. Most nuggets that are shiny and not dull are worth more than spot.....they are simply more rare in nugget form. Again....the color and locale are key in determining their value. If a nugget is somewhat darker in color, or even blackish....it has a high level of copper in it, which lowers its value drastically. None of this is probably news to You, but to answer Your question about unloading either.....The easiest to unload would have to be the coins....easily. Depending on where You`re located You might not have a gem/mineral shop or dealer within a reasonable distance from You. (The nearest shop near me is about 200 miles away) If You`re going to unload the nuggets, shop around and take Your time. Gold nuggets are more popular than ever as gold prospecting is enjoying its "second wind."

I have always wanted to set up a good sluice box for a weekend and see what I could find. The problem is there is hardly any gold near where I live. If I had the means I`d like to go to Nome Alaska and prospect up there as well.
