I only have one, and it's bigger than Steve's. Ptolemy lll, Euergetes..246-221 BC. Obv. Zesus Ammon. Rev. Eagle standing left on Thunderbolts, cornucopia infield right. 42mm x 71g
Funny, I didn't know it was Zeus. I thought they did the Roman thing and put their rulers faces on the coins. Well, another bit of knowledge gathered. Thanks.
Well Eng, I must admit that your fella is pretty damn impressive!! ... but apparently TIF is packin' the big-one @ 92 grams!! ... well done, coin-Princess
I still don't have an example of Ptolemy (but it's on my Christmas list with some other 'big' ancients ).
I know this thread is a little aged but I figured I'd bump this rather than start anew as there is some good info here. I particularly enjoyed reading through all the links offered by TIF: So I bought a Ptolemy IV !!! 38mm, 5.8mm thick, and 46.5g - I love this coin . . . I'm certain this coin is BMC 38, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a "name" for the control mark which is just a touch different than E ? I also seem to be lost when it comes to making a connection to this one in the Svoronos reference.
Nice one! I don't own the Svoronos so usually I just go to http://ptolemybronze.com/ptolemy_series.html and try to figure it out. Except I didn't see your control symbol. Maybe wildwinds could help?
From the PtolemyBronze website (scroll to the section "Ptolemy III Alexandria EPSILON or LAMBDA or 'Plain' Series 4"): Sorting out who issued which Ptolemaic coins is a work in progress. The cited website, which seems to represent the most current scholarship, differs from the Svoronos attributions in many instances. Here's the Svoronos entry for your coin, which seems to be a Ptolemy III: http://www.coin.com//images/dr/svoronos/svc001p135t.html The corresponding plate, although it isn't particularly helpful in this instance: http://www.coin.com//images/dr/svoronos/svc029p001p.html
Guess the website is good for more than just the pictures? Guess I should have read the articles too!
This one is not very big. I haven't purchased any of the really big heavy types yet. Hopefully this year.
