Well, I just returned from the show - only 45 minutes on the road, not too much traffic even for a Saturday night, yeah! It was a very fun show, a great venue, and one of the most roomiest set ups ever! It was really great to see Acanthite, Mr. Organic, Illini420, and to finally meet Stella - who I also look forward to seeing in Chicago this week too. And of course, I always enjoy getting together with Jack and Mark! We hung out after the show, had dinner (we all had a wonderfully delicious halibut with a cilantro pico de gallo topping which was so yummy and tastey!) as well as drinks on Thursday night after the show. Then our hotel hosted happy hour on Friday night so a lot of the dealers showed up at our bar for half price drinks and snacks. We ended up snagging a few of them to join our poker game in the VIP lounge at our hotel. We really had a great time hanging out, chatting, drinking, and passing our pennies and nickels (which we used for chips) back and forth.

Now for the show, Thursday afternoon was pretty slow, but Friday picked up a bit. I made a few nice sales, bought several new coins, even a nice 1876 NGC PF64 RB, some really nice high end AU Lincolns (1911-S, 1912-D, 1924-D, etc.), and of course I had to buy another gorgeously toned coin - 1939 PCGS MS65 BN which is a silvery purple/blue! (I'll probably keep that one.)

Oh, yes, I've never seen the Cal Franchise Tax Board show up at a coin show in all the years I've been doing shows. That was quite a surprise, but I guess since our state is in so much arrears, they are getting desperate and a little heavy handed! It was no worries for the California dealers - but I think the out of state dealers were caught off guard. We all have to pay our sales tax, and California sure wants their fair share, that's for sure!

Then today, Saturday picked up also, lots of foot traffic, and some good sales - which is more typical for Saturdays. Now, for one little story from the show. A gentleman stopped by my table yesterday and told me about a few nice coins he has had for a while and was thinking about submitting to PCGS. He ended up bringing them to show me today, one was a gorgeous 1871 probably MS65 RB Indian cent which he left with me to submit to PCGS for grading. It's a really pretty and flawless coin. Then he showed me a nice 1916-D dime, probably VF/XF, that he also wanted to submit. He had bought this coin from a respected dealer about 10 years ago. Well, me not knowing a lot about silver, could still tell that it had hairlines from an old cleaning but I wanted to verify it before he "wasted" his money by submitting it, so I took it to another knowledgeable dealer who took one look and said it was a fake! Wow, my poor customer looked like you could have pushed him over with one finger! So just to make sure, we took it to another even more well known and very well respected dealer who also verified that it was in deed counterfeit. What a BIG HUGE BUMMER for my poor customer! - Luckily, however, the coin was still in the original 2x2 cardboard flip and the dealer is still in business, so I advised him to take it back, and that any reputable dealer should refund his money - since the price was also marked on the 2x2 - even if it was 10 years ago. I'll find out later if the dealer does take the coin back. I was told that there are a couple hundred thousand MORE known counterfeit 1916-D dimes than the amount actually minted - WOW! Pretty harsh statistics. Any way, just thought I'd share this, and send out a warning, if you want to buy a raw key date coin, please make sure you learn the diagnostics of the key dates in whatever series you collect!

Any way, all in all, I think it was a successful show, and I'm looking forward to doing it again in December. The only bad part for me is that I have my local monthly show TOMORROW and have to get up early, and do the whole set up/tear down thing all over again with no break! Oh well, the price of doing business - but at least I will get to see and chat with all my regulars!
