As I said before, whether or not SP means "specimen" or "special strike" is a very minor issue. Yeah it's good to know but so what ? The only reason I even mentioned it to begin with was to support the idea that the '64 coins that NGC desigated as SP were indeed the same coins that PCGS designated as SMS. That is the important point. Not what SP means.
This sounds like a 64 peace dollar. Maybe it is the same case, they existed but were destroyed. heck, to put all the cards on the table, 64 sms sets could have had 64 peace dollars.
No. Read your quote from Mark Twain first. No one has ever publicly sold a 1964 Peace dollar. I have sold 12 or 13 1964 SMS coins in the past year or so, including two complete five-piece sets and two or three singletons, all PCGS-certified, for around $100 grand. So, despite the protestations of ill-informed teenagers who think "Mattie" is a correct term for a coin finish rather than the name of my deceased miniature Doberman Pinscher, they exist, they are certified by both PCGS and NGC as Specimen or Special Strike coins, they are different from both 1965-67 coins and 1964 business strikes, and there is a large and well-developed market for them along collectors who actually know what they are talking about. That's all I've got to say.
More than extremely unlikely, for several reasons. First and foremost reason would be that it is logical that any '64 SMS coins (if that's what they were) were struck in 1964. While the '64 Peace dollars were not struck until May of 1965. Another reason is that we have first hand testimony and written documentation from people that were actually there, present on the mint floor, when the '64 Peace dollars were made and that documentation further covers what actually happened to all of the '64 Peace dollars, and dispels any and all rumors about the survival of '64 Peace dollars. So any speculation about the possibility of '64 SMS sets containing '64 Peace dollars is beyond the realm of reality.
Well, Rome tried to forget an emperor, the mint can try to forget a hand full of pocket change. (I am referring to Caligula, as some of his statues were tossed into rivers, and he was rather irresponsible with his power. He is actually a rather fun subject considering all the things he did, like have a FLOATING PALACE made.)
I DO NOT THINK SO BUT IT WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MS 67 1965 SMS. http://www.ebay.com/itm/380417143356?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649
I compare most of SMS Coins That I have certfied and uncertified this one is more luster and brighter and No dings or scratches...This will be ONE of a centerpiece of all my SMS Coins collection. I will keep it..
Are you sure about the no "dings"? I can clearly see a nice ding under Kennedy's eye on his upper cheek.
I just love this thread. It has me dazed and confused. Everytime I revisit it for the latest updates, all that goes through my little mind is: knick-knack paddy whack cheers
I alwys thought Hattie told Mattie about a thing she saw.... Had two big horns and a woooly jaw....WOOLY BULLY.... It actually was a buffalo,oh well:smile
Lee, I don't know what to tell you on this one...... It is obvious that the left hand at PCGS doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. I do find it funny that Mr. Hall doesn’t like his answers posted, what is he trying to hide? As long as you do not take his reply out of content or edit it, there is nothing wrong with posting it. His reply was address to you, so it is totally proper to post if you so desire. All I can go on are the email my dad had with the Grader’s supervisor when the change happened which clearly states that “SP” would stand for “Special Strikes”. If you want to further examine the issue, I would suggest you look at Coin Facts at the link below reference the so called 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollar. Jaime Hernandez writes several paragraphs on this so call coin and the descriptive phrase “Special Strike” is repeatedly use (LOL) but the word “Specimen” is not used once (still LOL). I suppose that now that I have pointed this out, someone from PCGS will be running around changing Coin Facts! Caleb http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/CoinDetail.aspx?s=6844&redir=t
Caleb, the red Don't post emails publically was entered by the CoinTalk admins who do not want email addresses posted due to spam crawlers. It was not added by David Hall. That particular text "used" to be Davids public email address which appears openly on the PCGS Forums. As for the conflicting reports? Nothing is new with regard to conflicts within PCGS as it seems that everybody has an opinion. However, I'm sure that David Hall's opinion outweighs Jaime Hernandez's opinion. At least in the context of this particular thread. I do not doubt that the dies used for these coins were special and I do not doubt that calling them SMS or Special Mint Sets is inappropriate but it seems that this is what the collecting public is willing to accept since it's easily digestable. If some type of documentation can be uncovered to absolutely prove otherwise, then it appears that these coins will always be referred to (accurate or not) as SMS coins. If you ask Roger Burdette, he moght put it on his list of things to look out for while he is doing his research. I know that I asked him to keep an eye out for Eisenhower Information and he found some really cool stuff which got posted over on the IKE Group web site. It's worth a try. P.S. On PCGS CoinFacts, Jaime does refer to the Washington Quarters in the context of Special Mint Sets. http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/CoinDetail.aspx?s=5974&g=1
