This type must be quite rare, I only found three examples in Coin Archives (see above).
Strangely enough they were all unsold when they appeared at auction. The estimates were quite reasonable, 100, 65 and 50 euros, in that order.

I've seen them in listings from scarce to rare.
I believe in JAs auction he had as "more scarce type"
I have only seen 1 other in hand a couple of years ago.
The history is great I love the history. I looked around for atleast 2 years to find another. I wasn't even into ancients back then.
This is 1 coin I know I'll never sell just because.

Yes I love the pegasus & Carthage coins in general.

@Deacon Ray there are some prutah & judean coins useing date and lyre palms.
Seems to common practice BC times.

Thanks eveyone for the kind words & replies.
Was a hard to narrow down. Some really nice coins didn't make the list because flaws or just not that high on my fave list, but probably should have been

"Compare" would be the word I should've used and better fitting.
I also like seeing what everyone has & collects. A lot of times I find coins in someones collections I've never seen before.
Yes that Diocletian Tet is definately a favorite. Feels good in hand.

Alegandron "ΤΩΙ ΚΡΑΤΙΣΤΩΙ..." ΜΕΓΑΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ, June 323 BCE

For the price you hammered, it was a pretty good "gamble" for a nice coin. Of course, I am more avaunt guard in how I do things in my life, so I try to be careful with my comments...

LOL, if YOU weren't gonna GIT IT, I was gonna GIT IT! :) But, I do not poach. Again, great capture!

I remeber MikeyZee found it right away. It was then we called a truce, lol.
Was a challenge to beat him to the better offerings after that. :angelic:
I think we both broke budget. I still browse buts been a while since I seen his name on anything.:D

Doug the patina is a dark green with the lime like deposits. The obverse strike as well as the colors just made me have to have it.
It is a rare Kolphon but how rare I really don't know.
It also seems to be counterstamped on the reverse, not sure on that to say it's fact.

I've not seen many which is why I snagged it up from JA, hoping no one would put up a fight.
I believe this is the best example I've seen personally. Happily it filled a 2 year search & I'll not part with it as long as I still breath.

You all are a great bunch.
Sometimes I wonder if it's a fellow CT member driving up or out bidding me.
But I'm with you @Alegandron if I know the name of the bidder on an item I'll pass it on by.

I don't think anyone here would outbid you on purpose. If I recognize the user handle of a bidder as someone from this forum (difficult because some of you guys use different names for your auction handles) I'll send that person a private PM asking how much they want that coin and whether they could let me take a stab at it. If it's something they really want, I back off. If they offer to let me have it, I let them know that likewise I'd be happy to back off on a coin in the future and let them have it.

Likewise, I've had people here PM me (easy because I use Sallent also as my handle at auction) and they've asked me if I would let them have a coin I was bidding on. That's happened to me three times, and in all three occasions I stepped aside and let them have the coin...even though I obviously wanted the coins enough to make a serious attempt at auction. I figured that hopefully those members will repay the favor in kind sometime in the future.

I agree @Sallent I don't think anyone on this forum would either.
There's only a few people here that know my name (not that it's secret). So there's no way I could point fingers anyway.
I think it's really an unspoken agreement or code of conduct. Or really a respect we have for one another.
I don't hesitate to PM & ask how serious a bidder is just as I've received PM''s asking me.
Like JA said the other day "we're all friends here".

@Smojo, That's a very cool mix!! I'd welcome each one to my collection.

My favorites are 1, 2, and 9 ...basically for the reasons you mentioned.

If you check FAC, I tried to 'steal' a few but the 'usual suspects' there showed up and made a fight of it and I had to let them take them....especially since I have already exceeded my monthly budget for this month and the next LOL

    Happy Holidays!!!

I've noticed there seems to be a "regular following" there.
I don't recall ever seeing an auction type such as FAC that has the "usual followers". Strikes me as kinda odd.
I blew right past my budget a month or so ago.

There was a time when eBay openly listed the high bidder's handle and sellers lost money because my friends laid off my lots. Of course, it worked both ways; some people would bid on lots 'flagged' by someone they knew would not have bid on that lot if they did not know it was worth more than that. I am a little surprised so many dealers still publish names. I have backed off lots because I knew the leader. I once really upset a friend who did not bid on a lot I was leading on because I did not defend the bid when I was outbid and he would have paid more than the eventual winner did. Auctions are a complex thing. In person you really do not know if the hand that goes up is the bidder or an agent hired to represent him. Online, I have been told that a friend was avoiding a lot because I had bid on it but the dsmith who was bidding was a different person. To me the worst thing was when a dealer at as show showed me a coin he bought at an auction because he knew I would want it and it was going cheap by his definition. I was the underbidder and let him keep the coin. Some we win....some get rained out.

The type may indeed be rare, but probably some examples of it are sold in bulk lots. It's one of those coins that are easily overlooked as "just another Greek thunderbolt." If you're not reading the name of the city and don't know that any and all issues of Apollonis Lydia, (whether pre-Roman or provincial) are quite rare, it's going to look like a thousand other Greek bronzes, particularly a number of Seleucid types.

A fourth example is found on the Wildwinds page, third coin down.

I've been on the dealer end of that situation a couple of times and I've always let the coin go to its intended owner without a premium. But I'm a sucker!

I don't know Doug, maybe it's just how I look at things.
If a person is willing to pay more than me then I shouldn't really get upset. But a common courtesy is always a great gesture among peers, more of out of respect maybe.

    I've always called them Sestertius

Sometimes the spell check doesn't even work.
Every time I type end with "ertius" it comes up "tarius."

It's android or Google to blame, lol.
