When everyone started their best of 2016 I thought to myself no way. I didn't want to add moderns to the mix and I really just got serious about collecting ancients in May. Did I really have enough to fill 10 slots? Amazingly yes, and then some. Do they compete with what the other members have? Oh hell no. So you guys got me thinking. I pulled up my spread sheet & then pulled everything out. I actually put some back & narrowed it down to 10. They're not gems and I'm all over the place, no specific area it would seem. Counting backwards these are my favorite 10. Maybe not the best but I'm learning. #10 Makes the list only because it's my first Sestarius. Faustina II, Juno #9 Because it's a cool Carthage Pegasus, date palm #8 Kolophon of Ionia suposed to be rare but I love the color of the patina. Apollo head, palm #7 An Ae Follis Maximinus II, Jupiter #6 Another chocolate Follis Constantine, Victory (from JA) #5 Ae Follis (recently) Licinius, Genio (R2) #4 This has to be on the list Postumus, Pax. (from JA) #3 Another chocolate VRBS Roma (from JA) #2 Hefty Tet, Alexandria Diocletian, eagle (from JA) Finally my #1 I search for longer than I've been collecting ancients for this one, that was affordable. It has a meaning close to my heart. My eyes about popped out of my head when I saw this offered by JA. Lydia, Apollonis Head of young Herackles, Winged thunderbolt Feel free to add. Thanks for the help you all have given me. There's a few of you that really helped me to make the decission to cross from many years of collecting moderns to ancients. Without you I.don't think I would have done it.
Well, I don't think anyone here is competing with anyone else. At least I hope not. We are all in our own unique journeys through this hobby, and I much enjoy seeing the coins others find while on their own path through the world of ancient coins. You did well. I particularly like your #6 and #2...that Diocletian tet is quite a beauty.
Numbers 9 and 3 are my favorites. But I have to say you've done well for only collecting Ancients for 6 months. I would give a home in my collection to any one of them. Congrats.
Are those die breaks across the face of #7? If so, that is unusual. I believe my favorite is #9 the Carthage.
a great start at acients smojo, they sure as heck are better than my first 10 ancient coins! i'd like to have that vrbs roma, much nicer than the two i have ...and the eagle with vexilla tet reverse is on my list as well.
It looks like some Doug, mixed with corrosion. I picked that one from FAC, free auction. It's funny half of those came from JA. I hadn't realized that before. The VRBS was once JB Goods. I have another but doesn't compare. That Tet is the chunkiest one I have. Correction the VRBS was YOC The Victory came from JB Good
@Smojo , I would take any and all of yours! They are a great Top 10, especially since you have been collecting Ancients since May this year! Congrats! If I were to snare just ONE, I would capture the Carthage Pegasos / Palm. I am really partial to Carthage coinage as they are steeped in history as rivals to Republican Rome... Yours is a great example! Mine is a bit cruder: Carthage Siculo AE 15 Palm Tree Pegasus
Thanks. I posted a thread about that Carthage before I bought it. With the go ahead from you I went & pulled the trigger. I got a few PM's not to do that again, lol.
Thanks Phil. That is silvering. The only coin I own in its own didplay. Alexandrian Tets are awsome thats my chub. Hoping to budget a few more in before the laws change.
Very nice set of coins, especially in view of collecting for only 6 months. Congrats your well on your way to a great ancient collection, all nice but my favorite the Carthage.
Like Ancient Aussie says, that is diversified and well put together group of coins, considering you have only been collecting for 6 months. Wish you all the best on this exciting adventure - the collecting of ancient coins! BTW, my favorite from your collection is the coin from Carthage.
