When I was in the (neighboring) Netherlands for the first time as a kid, I thought the dubbeltje (10 ct coin) was play money. Our (German) 1 pfennig coin did indeed circulate until the end of the DM cash in late 2001. Its "ancestors" between 1873 and 1940 were 17.5 mm copper coins, the ones between 1940 and 1948 they were 17.0 mm zinc, and when that "DM pfennig" was introduced in 1948 (copper-plated steel), it shrunk to 16.5 mm. But the 1 cent coin that we (in the euro area) have now is even a tad smaller: 16.25 mm. Several member states do not use it any more due to its low value ... Christian
