JCro57 COINS: Change I Can Believe in

    Hello, Coin Talkers!

I am getting close to having every single blank and planchet for every minted coin in the 20th and 20th centuries (except gold, 5 oz silver, and proofs, which I don't care to collect). I have 2 questions.

    1. Does anyone own, or have you ever seen, either a type 1or 2 silver-alloy war nickel?

    2. I like having things uniform. But is it worth it to slab inexpensive blanks/planchets, like clad dimes, copper cents, etc., if they are valued under $10 and some even under $2?

Would love to hear what those who collect those think especially. How do you display them if not slabbed? Thank you.

I haven't, but @Fred Weinberg almost assuredly has at least one of each of those planchets in stock.

As for slabbing those other planchets . . . I'd say no, the value of most of them does not justify the cost of slabbing them.

I actually talked to him earlier; he doesn't have either type :(

    @JCro57
What is your fascination with blanks? But it's great!
I would be the wrong person to ask because I will send anything to get slabbed or purchase anything if it is priced right..

Financially it doesn't make sense to, but it would be interesting to see all 36 pieces in one set all in the same style holder with consecutive serial numbers.

My fascination started by wanting to put a blank in with my Steel Cent Set. But then I learned there are "blanks" and then there are "planchets." So now I need TWO...and then I wanted unplated zinc cents, both types. Then I just wanted to get all of the different kinds. Then I wanted broadstrikess. Then off-centered coins with just the date...It doesn't stop!

Is there any difference in the type of metal/blank/planchet or weight from the very first Sacajawea dollar to the presidential dollars now?

Does liking my question mean there is a difference?

It's a good question and I have to investigate! But most likely they are the same all throughout the series.

Ok. Gotcha my friend. Do you have a blank war nickel in your collection?

No, the Sac, NA, and President dollars all use the same planchets. Same weight, same composition.

Have to add one to my count, 37 pieces in the set. Forgot there would be three for the zinc cent. Zinc blank, zinc planchet, copper plated zinc planchet. Add a fourth if you can find a copper plated zinc blank, an error error.

Is a copper plated zinc cent expensive?

A copper plated zinc cent? No, they make about 8 billion of them every year and have for over 30 years. So 240 Billion pieces available.

Ok. I have a zinc and a copper and an unplated zinc cent. The copper plated zinc is different than the regular zinc?

    No difference -
Composition: Pure copper core with outer layers of manganese-brass (.770 copper, .070 manganese, .120 zinc, .040 nickel)

    Weight: 8.1 grams

    Diameter: 26.5 mm

No. I researched a bit on-line but haven't found an example yet.
