What is this about I put the other to next to it so you can see a new one and old one look like next to it
Composition was changed in 1982 from a copper alloy to copper plated zinc. Your silver penny is coated or plated with a silver colored metal.
What they are getting at OP is there is a slight chance yours could be a rare trial struck in aluminum to be given to Congress. The US government has declared them illegal to own. However, could you give us the weight of this coin please? Does it feel a LOT lighter than a regular cent?
Most likely by far is this chem experiment http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/goldsilverpenny.htm
Most likely, but it is a 74d, and they just discovered at least one. So, instead of 100% certainty its a chemistry experiment, we can only be 99.9% sure until we know the weight.
Maybe I am, but weirder stuff has happened. Remember people HAVE posted authentic things like Continental Dollars found in pawn shops before. Now, 99% of such stuff ISN'T real, but it has happened.
My thought's exactly!! I would be at 99.9999% sure. Get it on a scale and then we can bump it up the 0.0001%.
I read about the aluminum one on line a year or so ago when I found this one and I have a friend bring over a scale in a few hours BUT I read that the aluminum one is like 1 gram or close to (comments)? And this one i am pretty sure comparing to a regular penny in the hand dose not feal that light (1 gram) ish. It feals the same or about the same as normal penny
No. If it were on dime stock, it would be thinner, smaller in diameter, or some combination of both, and lighter than a normal penny. it would also show the copper at the edge. No other planchet will fit into the collar die.
It's possible, but not probable. The mint would have had to make coin blanks out of the wrong planchet material, then feed the blank into the coining press. It's happened before, but it's rare. Your rim doesn't show any of the dime/quarter cladding associated with those coins. So not likely from either of those planchets. Nickel? Possible? Sure. Probable? No. Please post the weight of the coin as soon as you can.
