Very nice write up of fascinating historical events. The West had an extremely different interaction with Japan for various reasons that historians have delineated. By the time the West arrived in Japan, Japan had already endured at least two smallpox epidemics, so the population was largely inoculated against it. Many other countries that the West ended up occupying hadn't ever faced this horrific disease and, lacking resistance, the existing populations were often decimated, making conquering such counties relatively easier. Not so for Japan. Also, the West entered Japan around the time of its heavily militarized warring states period, so missionaries and explorers faced fierce and heavily armed Samurai warriors who would not back down. As such, any efforts to colonize Japan met with such hostile resistance that the West eventually gave up. As said, Christianity did spread there regardless and the West made numerous attempts to catalyze its further spread. Ultimately, the Japanese ruling class saw it as a dire threat to their culture and power and so violently suppressed it. Anyone with a very strong stomach can see this age dramatized in Martin Scorsese's excellent but extremely brutal 2016 film "Silence." Be warned, it is not for the squeamish. The film was based on the 1969 Japanese novel "Silence" by Shusaku Endo, also available in English. In addition, the NHK show "Japanology," created by Japanese public television in English, made a 2-part series on "Hidden Christians" that visits Japanese sites and museums dedicated to this topic. Available on YouTube.
