    Right you are...I wasn't...but you weren't there either ;--)

You see before the 70's there wasn't such a thing as a grading Co...(they came in the late 70's if I remember right) Grading Co. is the #1 place that has put names on the holders...I don't think that back in the 70's and before many dealers sold coins hyped on a name.

Now I"m still researching this and I'm not going to say that I'm 100% right...I may be 100% wrong...and I'll agree that I'm wrong more than right but I'd like to research this alittle more and find what I can...it has already helped me read some articles I wouldn't have.

I agree.....I don't think the name of a collector...the place of where the silver came from or anything else should raise the value...it will rip off new collectors sooner or later.

I follow some of what Speedy is thinking. To use a parallel example. When I was a kid in the 70's and early 80's, you watch a movie, then the toys came out. Now you get slammed with a flood of toys months before even the movie trailers come out.

Hype. Hype. Hype. Hype. Hype......all to make more $$'s

To me, the funniest example of hyped up "name brand" coins are ship wreck coins. If your buying such a coin for the history, cool, but numismatically, can you think of any other type of mega super duper clean coined that gets slabbed/graded by the big 3 without being noted as "cleaned". Ship wreck coins obviously get cleaned, but some folks go a bit nuts if they find out a coin has ever come into contact with distilled water and wasn't labeled as "cleaned". Anywho.....

    A few more thoughts:

As GD is fond of stating, "By the coin, not the holder"

If I had some "name brand" coin, and someone wanted to pay me a %200 mark up for it, I'd think they had more dollars than sense, and help lighten their burden of all that excess $$'s

Remember, everything is only worth what some sucker is willing to pay for it.

You are correct, I but I didn't claim that the past was better than the present, in part because I wasn't there.

This is my point, though. You can't possibly remember it, but you spoke authoritatively, even without being sure.

Maybe, but the people who generally buy Eliasbergs aren't the newbies.

That said, please understand that I am mostly (not quite completely) playing devil's advocate here. I probably wouldn't pay more for a bust half just because it was owned by Overton, but I certainly understand why someone might.

Your right...and I'm sorry for any hard feelings I might have caused...

I will keep searching this but will try not to post on this thread ;--)

Oh no, there are no hard feelings at all! I've enjoyed this thread and hope that I haven't caused any hard feelings either.
