Moen: I believe that it would show some effect of the plating, and the piece seems to be quite clean and clear.
What effect are you talking about? Certainly run-of-the-mill zincolns don't show any special effects from their copper plating.
Regular "Zincoln" pennies are struck on plated blanks... so the surface is as-struck... but if you plate on TOP of that, you will get the visible plating effects referred to... which are textural because the metal does not deposit completely smoothly. It might not be obvious to the nude eye but certainly under magnification you will see it.
I think he's probably talking the effects of plating after the coin is minted, e.g., steel cent "reprocessing." Added: Oops...Too slow!
Yes, but plating is a micro thin layer that will dull some of the sharper details on a well-struck coin but a penny isn't all that well-struck to begin with. I doubt you could see the effects of plating, especially a properly done job, on the average lincoln cent. Certainly not in a photograph of that cent with the naked eye. I think the jury is still out but I'm gonna cast my vote for a silver plated post mint science experiment. :hammer:
Will the weight tell us for sure? i'm still trying to find a scale. just one more question, how acurate should the scale be? thanks.
Moen, I know that this is late in the posts but I considered electroplating when looking at the coin! However, I quickly dismissed that theory as the coin does not have a high enough sheen or even any gloss to it. Therefore, IMHO the Cent was struck on a planchet that did not receive the Copper coating for one reason or another or did not go though the Copper coating process.
Sounds like a plated cent---a normal cent weighs 2.5 (that is from the Red Book) and so the plating wouldn't weigh that much and its sure doesn't seem to be missing anything...but yet as already said--the plating would leave the detail kindof lacking... Speedy
Mass: 2.5 g (0.080 troy oz) Diameter: 19.05 mm (0.750 in) Thickness: 1.55 mm (0.061 in) Edge: Plain Composition: Copper-plated Zinc 97.5% Zn, 2.5% Cu would a very thin layer of plating be just .002? It appears to have some copper on it...does that look to be showing from below? or remnants on top? The coin is VERY sharp.
Nice find. Even if it is not an error, it is a nice coin. I'd hang on to it if I were you. I wouldn't risk scratching it though.
