New collector here, and when I finish my ASE proof collection, I'm going to start on something else. I really, really like the Eagles. I really do. So I was thinking that once my collection is caught up (7 coins left), the only new coins that I'll buy are from the mint. Since I like the eagles so much, then next logical step for me is to go ahead and start the AGE's. So here's my question: Does it really matter if I buy ASE's or bullion to "trade" for the gold AGE'S? Bullion appears to be a bit cheaper, and I think overall, trading bullion instead of ASE's for gold Eagles might not make much difference. Simply put, when I get enough silver (be it ASE's or bullion) to trade for a 1 oz Gold Eagle, what puts me in the best place to get the best deal? Any thoughts? Then, is there really a great deal of difference between bullion AGE's and Proof AGE's? I'm not doing this as an investment, and I'm really partial to Proofs. I'll just keep buying silver until I get enough for gold.
hey bud. brother. brother in the same boat as me. i too have recently made the jump to gold. let me tell you, there is a golden light at the end of the tunnel. my PM collection initially started years ago with only buying bars. then i found canadian silver. so i decided i wanted every maple, and anything with a maple leaf on it. so i have tubes of consecutive year maples. and all of the low mintage maple products (piedfort, 25th anniversary, maple leaf foreverer etc etc). then, as an american, i felt guilty, so i started doing the same with eagles. consecutive years and special sets. my collection is complete in my eyes except for the 2011 25th anniversary set. im working on it now. once i get it, i am eyeing gold eagles and buffalos. i have a few. so thats my collection. the light at the end of the tunnel is this. APMEX does metal exchanges BY WEIGHT. you call up, they give you a rate, like 43oz to 1 oz, you box up your silver and send it in for gold. so if you have enough silver, you can trade for gold my friend. i am waiting for the ratio to get a little better, and then i am going after a 10oz gold bar or two.
