Hi Everyone, Saw this on my twitter feed today. http://www.perthmintbullion.com/us/..._in_99_99_pure_silver.aspx?platform=hootsuite I've never bought a bar before but interested in this item. How do most of you feel about bars? Or is it basically fine since silver is silver & just focus on price over spot? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In 15 years of bartending, I met a lot of bar owners who didn't know the first thing about running a bar. All they knew how to do was order a drink, and owning a bar seemed like a profitable business since they didn't have to pay their tab. Chris
When I first read Chris' response I went, "huh?" I'm a little slow on the uptake today (I only got it when I went back and read the OP). LOL. To try to answer his question, should he be checking for a response: the local coin dealer/bullion seller I've done the most business with recommends 10 oz. silver bars from a well-known producer in order to get the most bang for the buck, buying or selling. Steve
That's the whole joke... the 3rd guy ducked and didn't walk into the bar!!! The 1st two hurt their heads!
To try to bring this back on track I will attempt to answer the original poster. Generally speaking silver bars have a higher premium than silver rounds. For some name brands the premium is even higher. Right now you would probably get that premium back when selling. But will that always be the case? It's hard to tell. Generally speaking I buy 1 oz rounds in preferences to 1 oz bars because of the lower cost, although I do have some of the latter. But at higher weights I generally buy bars for the convenience of storage. After all, it is easier to get 20 ten ounce bars in a safety deposit box than it is to get 10 rolls of 20 rounds.
in all my trading with dealers and non dealers rounds and bars usually go for spot. The dealers don't care whether you have rounds or 10 oz bars, it will get you the same. If you have art bars or Englehard or whatever you might fetch a premium. I prefer rounds because I can stack them easier believe it or not. The 10 oz bars always come in a bag that doesn 't work well for me. I personally would not go for more then 10oz bars because then the question of counterfits really comes into play. I suggest diversifying your silver. ASE's , 90%, rounds, and 10oz bars. All are good and fun to stack.
Perth is reputable, if you like it go for it. You wouldn't have any problem selling that one. The ones that can get you in trouble are the random ones where people don't know or trust the manufacturer.
For my silver bars, I take them out of the sleeves and put them in these: http://www.air-tites.com/5-oz-and-10-oz-silver-bar-holders.htm#.WLngzhLytsg The 5oz are a little finnicky in size, so you have to be careful which brands. The 1oz is pretty much universal. But, the plus is that the bars then stack well and are protected and can be seen easily. Yeah, it's a little extra cost, but honestly if I'm paying $200 for a 10oz bar, the extra buck-sixty is nothing. My collection runs the range from fractional silver, junk 90%, rounds and bars 1oz, 2oz, 5oz and 10oz from government bullion to private mint. I haven't met a form of silver I didn't like......
I dreamt I ordered 6 oz of silver because they were cheaper for random 1 oz bars. When they arrived, they were brands I didn't recognize. I googled them to no avail. I did a magnet test and got nervous on one of them. In real life I would never do this. It's why I stick to Canadian, American, Australian or other very well known government mint producers. You should too. Unless you want to dream about getting ripped off.
Nope. You're mostly right. There's less risk in rounds and bars from reputable bullion dealers, but their lack of major security features make them higher risk than high detail ASE or high security featured Canadian Maples. I could be naked in the hottub and someone could hand me a Silver Maple leaf from the last few years and I could tell with nothing but my eyes with 99.9% certainty if it was authentic. I couldn't have this same certainly with private bullion dealer bars or rounds.
I dreamt that I was in hotub with many hot young Asian girls. Oh my that was nice. As far as the bars yes you just try to buy cheap. Dont pay $21 or $22 an ounce. It might be 10 years before you can break even. If its spot plus 50 cent or lower than a bar is fine.
