Hi guys I do not know if this is the right place for this but I have a small amount of Jewelry and melts from an old lady's jewelry Box. Some is marked some not. Would this kit be good at testing this kind of stuff and maybe foreign coins for silver. Or is there something cheaper better out there? THANKS JON http://www.providentmetals.com/complete-precious-metals-testing-kit-with-wood-case.html
Acid is the best way, that kit is kinda high. Here is one for $15 shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Gold-Test...276?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25744ae4ec
Thanks Detecto, I bought that one, a lot cheaper for everything but the box I do not need a box for the extra $20.00 Ha Ha. Have to see how this stuff works?
In my experience, the cheapest way to do this is to take what you need to assess to a coin or jewelry dealer. In order to give you a purchase price quote, they will test it to their satisfaction. Of course, I never like to see some of the material rubbed off on a testing stone/paper, but them's the breaks, just don't test it thousands of times... On a side note, I asked a local market maker about his testing with respect to potential tungsten and fakes in general. Apparently, he's comfortable with small weights and not so much with larger blocks that are easier/more profitable to fake. Apparently he would refuse larger AU bars. When asking about method of testing and suggesting that he use a sonic analysis, he indicated that reliable sonic testers are extraordinarily expensive, preventing him from using them.
and dont forget 18k gold test can be used for silver. in my personal opinion silver acid test is terrible. if you use 18k gold test it will turn a light blue on the stone if you put it on silver.
