My latest 'Owl' has just arrived. I like this one because it is a departure from the usual 'Owl' coins. It is:- SICILY Kamarina 420-405 B.C. Obv: Head of Athena wearing crested Attic helmet, left. Rev: KAMA, Owl standing left, head facing, grasping lizard in talons. Three pellets in ex. Bronze Tetras AE15 mm. 2.3gm. Ref: SNG Cop. 169; SNG ANS.1229; Please, post your 'Owl' variety.
Nice! I really like these little Kamarina bronzes. There are quite a few different varieties and I'd like to pick up a few more eventually. My only one at the moment is this slightly malevolent-looking one with spread wings.
I like these Kamarina owl & lizard issues and will probably get at least one more. SICILY, Kamarina 420-405 BCE AE tetras, 3.11 gm Obv: Head of Athena right, wearing winged Phrygian helmet; dotted border Rev: KAMA (legend from top to bottom), with owl standing left, lizard in talons; three dots in exergue Ref: Westermark / Jenkins 202, SNG ANS -., Calciati III No. 39 SICILY, Kamarina 420-405 BCE AE tetras, 3.34 gm Obv: Large head of Athena left, wearing crested helmet with wings Rev: Owl standing left, with lizard in talon; KAMA (retrograde) upward in right field; three dots in exergue Ref: Westermark / Jenkins 198 (see FIG. Pl. 35 / 198.24), SNG ANS 1230 Calciati III no. 28/4 (dotted-border type).
Nice!! => great OP-score, Topcat ... sadly, this dude does not have an example to toss into your cool thread (*fail*)
Great coins, Steve. I REALLY like the first one. It reminds me of an Owl standing next to a mirror showing half his head and all of his body which makes it look like one owl has two bodies, "How does he do that?"
Here's my Roman Republic owl. Unevenly struck, but I love it anyway 45 BC, L. Valerius Acisculus AR denarius 3.82 gm - 22mm Obv: Diademed head of Apollo Soranus right; behind, pick axe Rev: Owl with helmeted human head (Minerva) standing right, carrying two spears and shield. Reference: Crawford 474/2b
Sicily, Kamarina Bronze Tetras c. 410-405 B.C. Sicily, Kamarina Bronze Tetras (15mm, 3.21 gm) c. 410-405 B.C. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena left Rev: Owl grasping lizard; three pellets in exergue. Ref: Westermark and Jenkins 198; Calciati III pg. 61, 28; SNG ANS 1230. Great examples everyone! I just joined Coin Talk and wanted to add my example above. I've been collecting Ancient Greek coins for several years - love the history and artistry.
Welcome to the forum, Mike. I collect Greek silver staters. Do you collect silver, too, or only bronze?
Thanks everyone for your warm greetings and kind words. I have been checking out the forums for a while and and finally got around to opening an account. I look forward to participating in the discussions. Ancientnut - I do collect silver as well as bronze. I have a number of silver tets, didrachms, etc. Have not yet acquired any gold but hoping to pick up a nice one eventually. I also collect US Moderns as well as other things like Native American artifacts, vintage horse racing ephemera, etc. so it is always a challenge to channel my resources accordingly.
