Where have you heard this? Never! The ANA advises AGAINST white cotton gloves, even for proofs. You will NEVER EVER see a grader at either PCGS nor NGC ever use cotton gloves. NEVER! Ask them, they'll tell you so directly.
Yes in a certain light they do. I can't get any clearer pictures when it's the shiny mirror look. All smears into one. So I get it In different lighting for it not to be so mushy my camera isn't taking right.
That sounds like correct guidance to me. The damage from dropping a coin is far worse than a possible fingerprint.

Don't wear gloves. You can dip your fingertips in acetone before handling proofs as a precaution if you're concerned about oils. Gloves make it easier to drop coins since they impair dexterity, and particles in the fibers can scratch the coins.
