This is an older imaged full banded Merc, I should photograph the others in my collection. I love this series.
Tom, I have always meant to ask you, do you think that water spots on the right obverse field kept this coin out of an MS69 FB holder? IMO, this coin is the equal of many of the other MS69FB 1939-Ds. Certainly the surfaces, color quality, luster, and eye appeal are of the highest quality. All I know is that is the type of coin I would want if I was working on a box of twenty.
Howdy Paul- Yes, I think the water spots in the obverse might have been the reason for the MS68FB grade the coin received upon its submission to PCGS in the mid-1990s. It is still in the OGH and I have compared it side-by-side to a few MS69FB coins of the same date and from the same hoard that PCGS regraded into MS69FB holders in the early and mid-2000s. My coin was nicer than any of the others and the dealer who was selling an MS69FB looked at the coins and stated he thought mine was essentially a full point nicer than his. I'm certain that if I wanted to regrade the coin at that time that it would have gone MS69FB, but I didn't regrade it and have no plans on doing so in the future. This is one of the coins that would be in my Bo20 if I could fill one out.
