Milano/ Duchy AV Ducato ND Milano Mint Filippo Maria Visconti 1412-47 Duke of Milano Back in 1400s rulers actually led their armies into battle/ unlike today.
Here's another.... Frankfurt/ Imperial City/ under French Occupation AV Dukat 1796 In 1792 the crappy Prussian Army was defeated by a ragtag French force made up off poorly trained revolutionaries at Valmy. Thus part of Prussia was under French rule. Prussia under Friedrich Wilhelm I/ Friedrich II der Grosse fielded the best trained armies in Europe/ after Friedrich II died, it went all downhill. By 1815, a resurgent Prussian army helped defeat Napoleon at Waterloo.
I own several, I really like the Dutch and Russian examples. But I have searched a long time for aureus magnus ducats that were struck in Germany from 1955-81.
John, per our conversation a few days ago, I thought I owned some Ducats. Most of GoldGuldens weigh 3.25g, give or take .02 g. Ducats weigh 3.5g My earlier dated Guldens weigh 3.47g, which are .03g lighter. Here are a couple: Cologne, Riehl mint On the left image the date is in Roman Numerals, starting at 6:00 M CCCC XXXVI Goldgulden 3.46g Cologne, Riehl mint. Date same as above. This piece has the trefoil pointing to the cross. Weight 3.46g
Koln/ Cologne/ Erzbistum AV Goldgulden ND Bonn Mint Friedrich III von Saarewerden 1371-1414 Archbishop von Koln
Yes, my Mom was born in Cologne/ my Dad/ Julich which is from the Herzogtum of Julich-Cleve-Berg Here is a Dukat from there....(Julich-Berg) Julich-Berg AV Dukat 1711 (Vicariats Issue) Dusseldorf Mint I really like the Vicariats coinage! Johann Wilhelm II 1769-1716 Herzog zu Julich-Berg
Hoy Roman Empire/ Silesia/ Breslau AV 1/12 Dukat 1690 SHS (this coin was like pocket change) hopefully you had no holes in your pockets) Which is always a bad thing when carrying around pockets of gold coins! Breslau Mint HRE Leopold I 1657-1705
I used to own a couple from Germany but not the kind you mention. Bicentennial of the Augsburg Confession And a ducat from Hamburg. And as you can see from this one not all ducats were the same in regard to fineness and weight - depending on the country of course.
Regensburg/ Imperial City AV 1/32 Dukat ND (1750) HRE Franz I 1745-65 This is my tiniest AV coin 4mm. The "Crossed Keys" symbol of City. "B" = mintmaster Busch They had some really talented mint masters/ engravers back then.
AV Dukat 1633 K-B (Kremnitz Mint) Holy Roman Empire / Hungary HRE Ferdinand II 1619-37 In 1633 things looked bleak for Ferdinand and his Imperial (Catholic) Armies. They had just suffered a devastating defeat at Lutzen in 1632. The Swedish King was KIA/ but the victorious Swedish (Protestant) Armies went on their merry way/ looting/ burning/ pillaging Catholic towns/ cities. Got this from Polish Auction.
