The Dukat was the most common form of coinage. These where struck from 1200s right to 1933 (Yugoslavia)
The weight per unit stayed constant for 800 years/ hence your money had zero depreciation/ unlike today:(

    These came in all sizes 1/32 1/16 1/12 1/8 1/6 1/4 1/3 1/2 3/4
    1 1 1/4 1 13/4 2/ 3/ 4/ 6/ 7/8/9/ 10/ 12/ 14/16 right up to the big boys 50/ 60/ 72/ 100

I have close to 300 so far....
I will start this thread off with one from Transylvania IMG_0700.JPG IMG_0101.JPG

Frankfurt/ Imperial City/ under French Occupation
    AV Dukat 1796

In 1792 the crappy Prussian Army was defeated by a ragtag French force made up off poorly trained revolutionaries at Valmy. Thus part of Prussia was under French rule. Prussia under Friedrich Wilhelm I/ Friedrich II der Grosse fielded the best trained armies in Europe/ after Friedrich II died, it went all downhill. By 1815, a resurgent Prussian army helped defeat Napoleon at Waterloo. 3f924b4b8972a9c00015038c12bc498c.jpg

I own several, I really like the Dutch and Russian examples. But I have searched a long time for aureus magnus ducats that were struck in Germany from 1955-81.

John, per our conversation a few days ago, I thought I owned some
Ducats. Most of GoldGuldens weigh 3.25g, give or take .02 g. Ducats
weigh 3.5g My earlier dated Guldens weigh 3.47g, which are .03g lighter.
    Here are a couple:

Cologne, Riehl mint. Date same as above. This piece has the trefoil pointing
    to the cross. Weight 3.46g

I used to own a couple from Germany but not the kind you mention.

And a ducat from Hamburg. And as you can see from this one not all ducats were the same in regard to fineness and weight - depending on the country of course.

In 1633 things looked bleak for Ferdinand and his Imperial (Catholic) Armies. They had just suffered a devastating defeat at Lutzen in 1632. The Swedish King was KIA/ but the victorious Swedish (Protestant) Armies went on their merry way/ looting/ burning/ pillaging Catholic towns/ cities.:( Got this from Polish Auction. 9abd7c4941789df2c02b4a9a4f13febb.jpg
