That 1881-S Morgan dollar in the upper left first row that carboni7e posted did not begin life as a rattler. It was originally in a PCGS 4 generation holder, used from about January, 1990 into December, 1994 and it had the outer ring taken off at some time. The rattler holders did not have a barcode on the front of the insert and did not have "PCGS" on the front of the insert, either.
I assumed you knew, but from time-to-time I have folks ask me if they have found a new version of the rattler holder due to the difference in insert. Therefore, I thought I would give a "public service announcement" ahead of such questions.
Thanks. The Morgan is a real looker in hand. I wish they still used the grading standards from the rattler days.
The first generation PCGS holder, used from about February, 1986 through September, 1989, were significantly smaller than later generations and they featured plastic tongs that held the coin in place instead of the later used gaskets. These tongs tended to allow the coins to rotate slightly within the holder and to make a rattling noise when moved. Hence, "rattler".
Thank you TomB I thought it meant that but I would have tried to define it but I would have sounded foolish.
