Those coins are HUGE!!! I don't have anything that approximates the size of some of those monsters. This Trajan sestertius is my largest, but it seems rather dime like compared to some of those. Of course this one may have lost a gram or two to corrosion. Trajan; 98-117 AD AE Sestertius; 32mm/25.3g OBV: IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PMTRP COS VI P Laureate Bust Draped R REV: SENATVS POPVLVS ROMANVS FORTRED SC in exergue; Fortuna Redux seated L holding cornucopia and rudder (RIC 652, Cohen 158)
Incredible how big, thick and weighty some of these Bronzes are!!! I'll recheck my 'stash' but I believe the biggest I have is about 34 mm.....
my largest base metal coin isn't an ancient, but it's darn big....seen here phagocytizing a quarter. the coin is a siberian (russia) chunker from 1770 with a clipped planchet. here an oblique view of my largest ancient (width, diameter, and mass).
Man those are some massive bronze pieces, you got to give it to the Ptolomies of Egypt, their bronze coins are massive and beautifull. They also issued 42 g. AV Dekadrahms/along with mass produced AV Octodrahms 28g. But, you got to give the Mughals top prize for their AV 1000 Mohurs coins which weighed 12,000g. size 17cm diameter! Thirty-five pounds of gold!
Oh, man, I got a MONGO coin too! It MUST be a RARE Mint Error, as My Flying Eagle Cent is just. plain. HUGE! OOoops.... wait... Maybe I made a mistake... It is my coaster...sorry... As Gilda Radner would say...
It's funny what you can acquire in mixed lots sometimes. Here's a great big 5 kopecks of Catherine the Great. These weren't measured out very exactly - they can weigh between 46 and 57 grams. I wonder why anyone thought it was a good idea to get it slabbed, but NGC had to put it into an extra-thick holder... Damn cool coin, though, if you ask me, especially since it's dated 1776, and Catherine was a supporter of the American Revolution, at least indirectly.
Rather thin compared to others posted here, this is my largest diameter... Byzantine Empire Anatolia, Nikomedia Justinian (r.
