Bing, I knew you were heavy into the RR's, but I didn't realize you had any fourees in your collection. Here's one of mine...

Roman Republic, Pub. Crepusius, 82 BC, bronze core, Fouree Denarius, Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right, Rev: Horseman right wielding spear. (3.2 g, 16 mm, F)

Only the bronze core left, but I thought it was an attractive coin, especially the bust. Do you think some of the moneyers may have been counterfeiting their own coins? After all, they had all the skills and technology to pull it off, should they have fallen into an unscrupulous mood...

Mainstream scholars deny the existence of official fourrees for all Roman periods. There are some of us radicals that allow the possibility that some fourrees might have been produced in the mint or by mint workers 'moonlighting' but this can neither be proved or disproved. Certainly the vast majority of plated coins can be shown to be unofficial by style. The difference in opinion is that some of us are unwilling to say 'all' just because we have not found absolute proof that every specimen is 'bad'. If a plated coin was made by a mint worker in the mint using official mint equipment, there is no way to prove whether he was acting on official orders or on his own. There are no surviving records of mint activity of the normal variety let alone records spelling out illegal or unadmitted matters.

The book im reading is called ancient coins how to collect for fun and profit by ted g wear. Chapter 4 is called official counterfits and is the exact oppisit of what you said. How they made them to save money and then when taxes were do they would no except them. Id rather believe what you say then what this book says anyhow

Interesting! I have never heard of this book but researching I see it was from 1965. I collected ancients in 1965 but did not know it then either. I wonder if the author was referring to the debased silver of the later 3rd century that was so light on silver that they had to issue coins with a silver wash. These are not counterfeits but were the normal silver bearing coins of that period. Most today have lost their silvering but we sometimes see coins posted here that have part or all of it remaining. These are a completely different subject than fourrees of the good silver issues.
